That's very nice, but the longer I looked at it the less interesting it became. Not your fault; I just looked at it for too long. Anyway, even at that it's better than most. Thank you.

I feel so used. Also slightly gritty. I like that in a skyscape. Or in any picture at all, really.

I didn̢۪t vote on this challenge, in anticipation of the boring, aesthetically vacuous stuff that I assumed would win all the accolades, and I was right. So now I̢۪m just following posthumous down here on the forest floor, nibbling at his crumbs. Yours is fabulously crummy, by which I mean very a good and original and ambitious; an interesting photograph, and I̢۪d have given it at least an 8. Not that you care much about that I expect. Thank you.

I often wonder why, when I am so thrilled by pictures like this, so many others say, "I don't get it"; "I don't understand." Am I weird, or are they? Am I deficient, or are they?

"None of the above" is probably the correct answer. It's certainly the politically correct answer.

The point is to challenge the viewer to avoid categorising the photograph. To make the thing so slippery that grasping it provides an uncertain sensation, shot through with doubts, fears and insecurities. As if you were holding a kicking just-caught fish and if you hold it any looser it will suddenly flip away into the stream again, and if you squeeze it any tighter it will shoot out of your fist like a watermelon seed, and again it'll be gone. And then there you are empty handed and looking foolish, with nothing to show for all your effort bar some slimy fingers.

So why try to hold the fish at all? The answer is to experience it. To feel it, and marvel at its uncommon textures and tones. Feel how it feels. You don't have to measure it, you don't even have to identify it, and certainly you don't have to kill it. Just hold it, then let it go. See how good you feel now?

Well, that's what photographs like this are about. How a fish feels when you hold it, then how you feel when you let it go.

Thank you Ben; it's good to see with you again.

Never got my comments done. This was on my podium with equal silver medal. Or given the challenge topic, maybe equal bronze is better.
I'd have said something about the living experience it takes to distil this poem with such assurance. No country for callow youth. But I can't say that now because you'll think I'm just trimming my watchamajigger to suit the breeze, or some such mexed mitaphor. I admired your picture, gave it a 9, and a thank you.

This is the best photograph in the challenge. Not quite my highest score, because I can't make the connection to Byzantium. But that's very likely my problem, not yours. Anyway, it's a brilliant photograph; original and witty, and ultimately more entertaining than all of the other fifty-seven entries combined. 9. Thank you.
