I don't know what you mean by saying it's hard to get shots unless you're on continuous advance. Anyway, some good advice is to actually use a low ISO - 100 is fine! In Aperture Priority mode, set the aperture to f8. With the camera on a tripod, you should be able to get good shots when you learn to anticipate when the fireworks burst.
Also, try not to be downwind from them, otherwise you'll get a lot of smoke as well. ;-Þ

For such a small town - village? - it's interesting to see that there's an essential taxidermist. He must spend a lot of time stuffing possums that fail to trot across the road fast enough.

Well, I didn't know rhinos bathed themselves in water. They usually have dust baths - or maybe that's because dust is more readily available where they live. ;-Þ
The zoo where I used to be a volunteer guide has a succesful rhino breeding program.
