Most appropriate choice of subject for the challenge Janine. Nice strong diagonals and repeating shapes in the reflections, a very effective composition and nice low key exposure. Given the nature of the subject with its plain surfaces perhaps a cloud-free sky may have improved it further |

Congratulations Gin Tay on your commendable score and placing. This is a lovely image that fulfils the challenge brief very well. The simplicity, the diagonals, the lighting they all make a major contribution to create a very effective pattern image that has impact. |

Dear humans, SURPRISE!! Hahaha! xo, Mother Natureby snafflesComment: Hello from the critique club

Well, I don̢۪t think this challenge was ever meant to be taken seriously was it! You must have thought mother nature was having a laugh with all that unexpected snow, as such this is not one of your greatest entries but probably suitable for the challenge. I hope your maple continues to give you pleasant surprises. |

Grab the sunby kaiyangComment: Hello from the critique club

I can see why these unusual structures are considered to be iconic and why you have timed your shot to coincide with the suns position in relation to the bowl. I have to be honest and say that this just doesn̢۪t work for me, I think its probably because of the conflict of the natural scene surrounding these strange structures arising from its growth, the two, for me, just do not belong together they leave me feeling rather uncomfortable that they are there at all. The other thing that detracts is the over-saturation of the colours, it is a natural scene with unnatural structures that feels unnatural. Sorry I can̢۪t be more positive Yao but do please keep your entries coming. |

What a lovely avenue of trees. I̢۪ve got to be honest Janine, whilst I like the composition I̢۪m really not sure I̢۪m liking the overall feel. On one level I feel intrigued by the ephemeral feel it conveys of a magical woodland avenue but on the other stricter observation of the same scene I want to see a sharper more natural looking result so I really am torn between the two. |

I understand your comments about the challenging lighting Srikanth, you̢۪ve done well to control it the way you have. You have got a good exposure with plenty of detail in all areas, well done. This is obviously one very clever man there can̢۪t be many pilots who can also work on their own planes as he is here. I like your mono processing there is a nice range of tones throughout. A very pleasing image that was worthy of more recognition than it received. |

What an unusual macro this is, I don̢۪t believe I̢۪ve ever seen a similar image a free riding fly on a fly, unique. Technically, the image is spot on, a very accomplished image, I̢۪ve not even heard of your lens before but if this is anything to go by its some lens! That is not to detract from your own abilities in getting the best out of even the best of macro lenses. So, congratulations and welcome Roger to DPC and what a cracking start, we all look forward to lots more exciting images from you. |

Woman Texting Waiting Subway Trainby clickodakComment: Hello from the critique club
An intriguing image that contributes well to the free study challenge
Your commenter has identified where the strength in your image comes from, it is the simplicity of the scene. As you say, a common everyday scene that is easily discounted but readily appreciated in a straight forward simple shot like this. What works really well for me is the lighting, I don̢۪t know if you have used vignetting to create the effect or if this as you saw it but it does feel like a simple overhead light sufficient to light the woman alone so because of that it works well to add impact to the end result. The only thing I am a little uneasy about is the wall itself it feels unnaturally soft and unreal but perhaps that is how it is. Anyway, well done Marcel. |

Please tell us more Gin Tay, how have you done this? I’m really pleased that you are pushing your boundaries to explore and create such dynamic images as you are here. I love the bold colours, reflections, the softness of the motion blur in contrast to the sharp detail of the inner spheres, its a lovely very effective combination. Well done Gin Tay, keep clear of that comfort zoneâ€Â¦! |
