_M8H2685.jpgby Mal37Comment: nicely seen. this is a shot that takes a LOT of work, just because of the variables (RHP vs RHB or LHB, how the ump sets up, whether the batter crowds the plate). going for this shot also means you have limited opportunity to catch any ensuing action, because you are so far removed from the rest of the field (as well as the likelihood of having your view blocked by the umpire or catcher). however, when you can catch the shot, it makes it all worth it. again, nice work!
if you have time to experiment (and if the structure of the backstop permits), try a lower perspective with a shallower dof like this and see what happens.
another cool shot to get is of the ball coming into the catcher's mitt from behind at f/2.8, framed so that the pitcher is clearly visible (but oof). |

P9162505.jpgby OlyuziComment: nice shot! i don't know if it's my monitor or the image, but it looks a little light, like it could use a little levels adjustment. |

1M8H3181.jpgby Mal37Comment: you're on the right track with this, just some things to keep in mind. there are two types of action shots: general action, and player specific. with player specific shots, you really need to try to isolate the player; here, that would mean getting the 2B out of the background. also, crop tighter, either in-camera or in pp (and in pp, go on and straighten your horizons). lastly, you need the shot just before this one, while his leading foot is still in the air ;-)
on the other hand, this is fine just the way it is. why? well, it all depends on where it's going. the suggestions above would only make sense if the image was being turned in for publication, or if it was going to be used to highlight a gallery or be included in a portfolio. if the image is one of 2-300 going in an online gallery, it's fine just the way it is, because anyone expressing interest is going to receive the finer processing anyway. |
