Marla,

Fashionably late⦠What an entrance!

Seriously, number 41 is arresting. The star burst, cutting him off at the waist, is so natural and the small detail on floor is the exclamation point. So I settle into my seat, begin this little journey and itâs over so quickly. A beautiful series but I selfishly wanted more.

When I begin loosing interest in photography I often find myself pointing my camera at the low hanging sun. Loss of control and unpredictability, in photography, is so attractive. Shutter speeds so high Iâm hardly involved. Itâs a battle between sunlight and camera sensor.

Lovely inspirational work. Thanks

Mita,

Like they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words. These are no exception and I would only ruin them by my heavy handed prose. You can blame Don for making me feel inadequate. I enjoyed your essay and the common thread of couples. There is nothing redundant and you ended with my favorite of the bunch. Her look, with those dark eyes, and the pastel balloons floating in the background. Itâs a lovely snapshot!

Thanks

Barbara, structures and shapes, besides the car, seems to be a study in a patterns and rhythm. Your cover image is my favorite of the bunch. I can only stay interested so long because the common thread is technical. A collection of disparate manmade objects without relationships or dependencies. Nothing holding this group together that challenges the viewer. What do you want the viewer to take away from this experience? Black and white was a good choice and technically your photographs are very good. I think this series has potential but I need more guidance.

Don, your comment on Cliveâs essay caught my attention. On combining words and images, you said the two distinct media seem to hate each other. Iâve been critical of some of your previous essays because of superimposed text. Maybe you have to choose one, words or images, and let the other play a supportive role. Your essay Light, with reoccurring images of the old stone wall, does a nice job of this. We are treated to different angles but the subject matter stays consistent. Your images are a virtual stage for your poetry. I still believe book format, with words and images on opposing pages, would work best.

Possibly your most cohesive essay. Thanks

Paul, one for posterity. Beautiful work presented in a thoughtful way.

Tracks is a fascinating way to think of photography. Theyâre building blocks, our evolution, how we arrived at this place. They are what makes our next photograph. They are also the creative people, not only photographers, that we follow. Tracks are all around us and of course behind.

âIt ain't me, babeâ says the elephant trying his best to stay out of sight. This is no Gary Larson cartoon. This is no laughing matter. I sense your pining on the plight of the elephant and other creatures youâve photographed. At some point, like everything else, their tracks will simply end.

Posthumous summed up my feelings in words I canât match.

For some reason, your photographs with superimposed quoted text remind me of Roy Lichtensteinâs work. His paintings were parodies based on comic strips. Your essay, candid wedding moments, is deeper and more personal â full of pessimism and doubt, or so it seems, until the images blur and worries melt away. I enjoyed this unexpected turn in the story.

Iâm still not sure about text on images but it was an effective way to tell your story. As always, I enjoyed your work and youâve opened my eyes to some new possibilities.

Mariuca, I find these relationships fascinating. The matching patterns and colors are particularly appealing.

Somebody wakes up, gets dressed, and heads to the museum. Walking through the gallery, something catches their eye so they stop for a longer look. Was it their outfit, mannerisms, or a personal characteristic that made them pause? Had they seen this painting before? Is a copy hanging on the wall next to their bedroom closet? Maybe itâs in a book, next to a clothing catalogue, on their coffee table? The possibilities are endless so weâll chalk one up for serendipity. For the keen eye, they are unwitting actors in a story about to be told. The results are irresistible so you join the cast by making cameo appearance.

Excellent series! I hope you continue to capture these brief encounters. HCB says something like âlife is fluid, life is once forever.â

Clive, very enjoyable! Iâve gone through your essay a few times. For some reason, I end up spending more time interpreting your words than images. The supporting photographs, windows into this place, stayed in the background. We have canals like this in Washington, DC so this might explain why the environment seems so familiar. I found it easy to fall into your essay and make it my own experience.

What I really enjoyed is how your text depicted a place without delving into your images. Matter of fact descriptions and explanations of photographs, besides date and location, can and most often do ruin a picture. You stayed out of the way and I thank you for that.

Comment:
Two elements, well maybe three elements, of this photograph really work well IMO.

1. the perspective of the wall continues in its own shadow.
2. as others have mentioned, the detail in the beach tree leaves lower right. A nice place for the viewers eye to settle.
3. the burst of life and light coming through the impenetrable wall's doorway.
