Really lovely portrait! Lighting is soft and smooth, detail is great, DOF is perfect. But (and I know you've heard it by now) just doesn't say "family". Still a keeper for the portfolio!

In a word... snapshot. This looks very uncomposed, almost accidental. To improve this type of shot, I would suggest some interaction between the two subjects, i.e. touching, or looking at each other, etc. Also bring them closer together which will allow you to focus close on the faces thus avoiding distracting BG items (picture frame, etc).
