a sentinel posted between worlds of light and depthby posthumousComment: Greetings from the Comment Bomb Squad!
I have humbly accepted the job of commenting on the portfolio of a man who's mind I lack understanding of. Allow me to say a prayer and dive in!
Using a composition simultaneously including the Rule of Thirds, the Rule of Threes, a hint of framing and repetition of shape, the subject has a very well defined focal point. The tones of reflected light and dark are deep bringing the viewer deeper into the image in order to connect with a subject shielded by the watery shapes. Yet the subject is actually the guardian of the deep it inhabits! |

028by MQuinnComment: I like this better than your entry. I think your entry had too much fill flash. This is a bit better but the snow is still off color. It's probably a good representation of the lighing present, but the yellow/orange snow doesn't go over well. |

Where the blacktop ends and the world beginsby Yo_SpiffComment: Greeting from the Comment Bomb Squad!

I voted this shot a big time 9, and actually voted this higher than the blue ribbon winner from this challenge. I thought you did well with the exposure and the color and the sharpness in a challenge requiring SOOC performance. The advanced edit is great too. I like that your current work is studying one subject, something that you love. Message edited by author 2013-01-05 21:05:53. |

Here you have captured a nice, gritty, character portrait. I voted this a 6 in the challenge and the reasons for my vote were that it had great technicals with good exposure and sharpness. I found his face to be in shadow with the light coming in from behind his rightside making his eyes a little dark. The B&W conversion was very well done wth good tones and I like the gritty edge to this up close and personal capture.

Sweetnessby KelliComment: Greetings from the Comment Bomb Squad!

The title sure does reflect the subjeect! Sooo sweet! I think you did really well to get the high key effect here. What is detracting is the lack of contrast. I think you may have pushed up the shadows and highlights a lot, which degraded the contrast in the image. It is definitely noticeable in the eyes, which are very well focused and sharp, but lack the contrast.
The posed angle and the sweetness of the subject are the best features of this shot! |

I like the complimentary colors here, gold and purple, the color of royalty! I believe a couple things kept this in the lower half of the 5 range. I think the metal on the fork showed some wear with the scratches and dings. Also, the heavy rim of the bowl underneath the honey is reflected in the honey. I don't know how to keep that from happening. Also the fact that you took a macro shot with a non-macro lens. You did a great job with the close up being very detailed and clear.
Overall a nicely detailed and clear close up shot with great complimentary color! |

Drummer Boyby KelliComment: Greetings from the Comment Bomb Squad!

I think this shot has very good technicals. The exposure, focus and color are all great, the composition of the drummer, leaning slightly forward, works well to bring me into the frame. Alos the inclusion of the cymbal is important for the environmental portrait. You got great gold tones on the metal, and the motion blur of the drum sticks moving adds that needed forth dimension on any photograph, movement or time.
As an environmental portrait, there are some included elements that act as distractions. The plant in the forground, the person in the background and the hanging thing in the top right corner. Perhaps these were all included because they were out of your control to move the items, or recompose the picture by changing your position. As a challenge image, those distractions really need to be minimized. As a part of your personal collection, not really that big a deal. The background can be blurred to minimize distractions. The plant in the foreground really does interfere with the subject though. But again, it is understood that it could not really be moved.
I personally voted this shot a 7. I enjoyed it as an environmental portrait and as a part of the Movember challenge. I think you got a nice spread of 6 votes there and it is really a shame about the 1 and 2 voters. They are serious trolls!! LOL!!
