After Workby gsalComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: It would have been easy to submit this in monochrome but I'm really glad you didn't - the green and red hues make this image for me. The lady has centre stage but the guy at the bank, limp-wristed, knee bent with a Stella on the go is where the eyes is led - pushed I think from the column of signs in the window.
Critical stuff: Nope.
Overall: A fine, fine image. |

Positives: I've picked this up in this comment series for your eclectic use of negative space - on an iPad (not where I'm typing this from, but I did peek earlier) one has to scroll down to realise this isn't a block-grey classic. It's a fine boat, well imaged and it does a great job to anchor the image (pun intended) - most of all though, I like how we can just make out the horizon through the mist.
Critical stuff: No
Overall: Bold and effective. |

Positives: Bold contrast here despite the exclusively mid-toned subjects. i really like how we can't see the line and how the shirts are unpegged, thrown over. The arrangement of them in the frame, the aspect ratio, the absence of highlights, the structure as form all offer us an opportunity to ignore the shirts and instead comprehend the night and the (probable) domestic context. There are shapes here - the notion of shirts is irrelevant - for the second time in this FS, I proclaim this to be an abstract hiding in plain site.
Critical stuff: There'd be no point - it would be an act of denial.
Overall: Bold and effective (for some). |

Feathered and friendby MelethiaComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: What a delight this is. Convincing portrait, candid street and wildlife shot all rolled into one. Fabulous. The perspective of the railing offers a sense of depth to the image as does the distant horizon. The look on the child's face is fantastic as is the pelican's wary glance to us, the viewer.
Critical stuff: Nope.
Overall: A brilliant image. |

Hope and Apprehensionby markwileyComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Oh, this is excellent - the long shadows, the red coloration and the lone figure - all such strong compositional elements. I like the texture on yonder wall too though I think it is a little over-sharp. I really like the blazing glare of the sun as it pours in - quite apocalyptic; in fact, your scene has a touch of 28 Weeks Later rather than 'Hope and Appreciation'.
Critical stuff: I think parts of the image do look over sharpened and I think the image would look slightly better balanced with a slightly tighter crop at the top.
Overall: A very convincing image that I like a lot. |

Max clearance 2.05by LadComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: I saw the graffiti and then my brain saw through it, into the area beyond. I really enjoyed that moment and once you see it, it is puzzling how the brain took so long to find it. The muted colours of the graffiti make so much sense once we discern the mesh and there is just enough interest in the space beyond to keep our eyes busy - the real payoff come from the fictional structures that are created by the overlap, like the 'stairs' towards the left edge of the image.
Critical stuff: No

Positives: Gorgeous vintage toning and amazing POV. The line made by the surf and tracked by the parasols is just lovely. I wonder if this is Ben's - he's been on the beach this month and the tones are definitely Bennish! I like the square crop too - it maximises the screen real estate and give the image room to breathe. This is good because this image makes you want to take a deep breath.
Critical stuff: Nope
Overall: Charming image - like a 50s postcard. |

Positives: What a scene! Gothic and theatrical. Great POV and, great tones and interesting characters. So much story that I think I may be watching a play. The light is really strong too - great windows but plenty of light this side too. I like how we can see enough texture to touch too.
Critical stuff: I have to keep reassuring myself that this is your creation and that you haven;'t just snapped a play in progress - this problematical suggestion is still there though.
Overall: A powerful image. |

Sleepyheadby odriewComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Communicates the night most acutely - like an image intensified scene - it makes me feel bekitted. I had some military experience in my distant youth and this has the feel of night manoeuvres including the 'I'd'rather be in bed feeling'! The person sat on the side of the road looks in complete contrast to the one of the left - like a pictorial power gradient. The noise and flare adds to the sense of cold darkness - almost foggy. I like the toning too.
Critical stuff: Nothing really
Overall: Intriguing and engaging - an image that sucks you into a more uncomfortable world.
(Apologies for my somewhat rambling comment though!) |

Positives: I really like this image, I particularly enjoy the transected dog! The POV is stand out and the boy's gaze to the dog is captivating. The green coloration is excellent - I like the way the boy's top matches. Given the water below, I wonder where you are - on a jetty? On a boat?
Critical stuff: On a wide gamut monitor with most browsers, this image is too pink - it caused me to crank up a modified (colour handling) version of Firefox and the coloration there is much better. Browser colour handling can be an issue - I thought you should know.
Overall: This is a really high quality image. |
