Serious horizon problem here, to my eye. I can't see any compelling reason for it to be this far off kilter. Hell of a landscape though. I'd love to see it shot in low, golden light.

nice depth of field to this. looks to go on forever.
I like all the wood but would have enjoyed a bit more texture of one a bit closer perhaps, and panning the shot up from there.

the tilted horizon bothers me, as does the lack of color. Maybe straighten the horizon and bump up the color saturations and contrast a bit to add some punch to this image

Hello from the Critique Club.

Hi Barbara,

This is a nicely exposed and well captured photo. I like it.

I think perhaps it was not an ideal choice for this challenge as it does not scream 'perspective' (Which a large number of voters need to hear during voting!)

You did not receive many comments during this challenge which may suggest that voters slipped over the image too quickly, possibly clicking the middle of the road '5' and moving on. This is a shame as this shot has many merits. It is sharp and has great imapact.

How might it be improved...
IMO the crop is a little too tight, I would like to see either more of the swimmer and pool or go the other way and crop in even tighter to the face.

The light is harsh, but this works in this circumstance. As for fringing, well this can be removed in post-processing, but in basic editing not really an option.

I have looked at your previous photos and I am impressed by your approach. There is a choice on DPChallenge IMO to either go with your own style or tailor shots for the voters. In your case stick with your style as it shows great promise.

This shot and your success shot show good technique and only scored low because of the impression of not conveying the challenge sufficiently.

Overall very good work, this is your highest scoring entry deservedly and I look forward to seeing more or your pictures. I think very soon you will be seeing scores in the 6's and this leads in turn to top 20's, Top 10's and ribbons.

Regards

Chris

Lovely find..My opinion is that you should maybe crop in a bit because the background is distracting. Or even brighten up the main object and saturate the background a bit.

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
You are so right ....I think this is a great out of the box shot.

Composition:
The composition is fine .. the dirt track is almost on thirds and the top of the cages are working towards that are well.

Subject:
So what ... success is self determined .. .and starting is always a good place to begin.

Technical (Colour and light):
your aperture you included in your comments it is the f stop information so is 3.8.

Colours are great and sharp for something with so much movement.

To grow its vote?:
Think about how others will see the image ... I think this is one from left field .. and for me that works .. for others they like to be spoon fed the normal type o stuff... you have a good eye use it.

Summary:
Great work for a first entry fantastic.

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari
