I don't do New Year's resolutions, so I figured quit smoking would be a good one for someone who actually smokes.

That's some wicked smoke. You've done a great job lighting that smoke to bring out all of it's whirly whimsy. Unfortunately, and I'm sure you noticed, you blew out the detail on the match.

I'm not sure what your lighting setup was, but it may have been possible to shield the match from some of that light by putting an object between it and the light source. I'm not saying it would be necessarily easy to shadow just the stick without shadowing the smoke or the tip of the match, but I think it's doable.

The composition is a decent and fairly natural choice. I also like the black and white with just a wee bit of an orange burst. The sharpness seems to fallen a bit behind the match and landed on the smoke. One could argue that the smoke is the intended focus though, especially given your title.

Like the effect of the smoke and nice focus on the match.

a-HA! HERE is an image that profits from putting the subject dead-center! I'm having a hard time deciding if I like the blown-out highlight of the matchstick, but I love everything else. eh, perhaps just a bit too harsh

Care to share how you capture the smoke? it's very nice!
(BTW - I was smoking for about 5-6 years, 25~ per day. stopped quickly with "the easy way to stop smoking" book ;) )

This is a wonderful shot. My only suggestion would be to crop one side so that the match was not so centered.

Love the composition...feel like a smoking cigarette as opposed to the (overblown) match would've struck a chord much deeper.

Well I wanted to try this but don't have a smoker to light the ciggie. Well, I could not find a ciggie in the first place. We're all quitters! Wonderful shot and hope it ribbons.

You don't smoke! So I guess you accomplished your goal. :) Congratulations. Way to raise the bar!
