That's really why the cross was placed on St. Clement's Island in 1934. Maryland was founded in 1634 as a place of religious toleration. Yes, it is humorous that a cross was used but remember, it was 1934...

FYI...
Taken in IR, color swapped, curves. That's all the editing that was done. My apologies if it seemed too much.

The sun was directly behind the cross, creating the halo effect. The cross is about 40 feet tall; I laid down on the ground with the fisheye to get the sun in the right place.
