Greetings from the Critique Club!

The message
A nice portrait that shows off some of the girl's personality. She seems bubbly, exuberant, and (yes!) funny. Someone who would be a joy to be with.

Creative choices
The model's expression is great, and really "makes" this photo. The striped shirt works well, as does the hat. The lighting doesn't seem right, although I don't have enough experience myself to say just what's wrong; the shadows just seem strange. I like the centered composition (after all, she likes to be the "center of attention", right!). But I think cropping off the bottom third (at about her elbows) would give the portrait more impact.

Technical aspects
This photo is technically perfect. Focus, exposure, color are all great.

Lighting and expression work well ... I just think a much tighter crop would show this off to better effect.

A lovely young lady! Great expression. Pose is a little to centered and straight on. This makes the shot look a little flat. If you turned her a little and croopped off side a bit (probably the right since she is looking to the left) it would give a more potent composition.

Excellent! Good expression, nice focus, good lighting. Great kid photo. 9

Great expression but I would have liked a tighter crop. Also... don't apologize for your entry in your title... the voters tend not to like it.

Lighting: Nicely done, although the shadow on the nose may be a bit strong.
Pose: Her expression is the shot, so a tighter framing around her face and shoulders would have made this a much stronger portrait of her. Other than that, I would have prefered the camera angle to have been a bit above her eye level.
Background: The background is great. It compliments her shirt nicely.

This is great - her expression makes the photo- The colors ae wonderfully coordinated and muted so that her face really stands out. 8

!st time very good.

Great expression. The light is somewhat dark at the bottom, and the focus is a little soft, but if this is your first attempt, you might want to consider a cereer in portraits. ;-)

Very nice. Good job.

It is not a bad first attempt. Surely, I would go for a tighter crop. You have a very good model and the face needs more focus.
Great shot though. 9

This is adorable. You know she will probably want to crawl under the nearest rock when you show this to her prom date, right? Great portrait. The look on her face is priceless. I would prefer a more right-handed presentation...crop off to the right and leave negative space on the left in the direction to where she looks. Good effort! :o)

Yea! A portrait with some life and humour! Focus, sharpness, colour, lighting of facial features all commendable. Wrinkled drapery and trousers at bottom of frame are distracting; you don't want to crop fingers though, so to fix that would require reshoot. Might have cropped a little higher, so that her head was a little farther from top of frame. Give that model a lollipop for a job well done!

I'd have gone in for a closer shot, and/or cropped the one here further. Love the pose and expression.

Excellent first attempt. She looks happy. There's a strange shadow from her nose, but it's not terrible. Nice job.
06/30/2004 12:31:51 PM
Crop a bit more.

Cute kid shot! I really like the way her clothes are similar tones to the colour of the background ....makes me focus on the girl. Lovely lighting and skin tones. Pose is a bit different from the classic which adds interest. Good studio color portrait.

Excellent portrait, I love it. Title sucks, but not marks off for that ;)

A wonderful child and GREAT expression. BAckground and its color is perfect for this. The biggest problem is the hot spot on the hat just above her forehead.
06/29/2004 06:30:00 PM
great expression
06/29/2004 05:45:36 PM
Good job on your first attempt. I would've cropped out her lower body though. Her hat also seems like there's a rainbow colorish reflection on it.

Good attempted especially for a first - 8

Nice. I like the purple background and shirt. Cute expression too.
06/28/2004 02:32:37 PM
really nice shot and a good attempt to get some "life" about the picture.

Looks great to me. Just the spotty, uneven lighting but I think it works here. I also of liked her cropped a little tighter. Over all this is really good. 8 from me.

i like the look on her face and the color reflections in her hat.

That's good that you're trying something for the first time. I don't know if you need to tell voters that or not, it seems like you're trying to get better votes from sympathy that it is you first attempt. But it is well done nevertheles. Would like to see more of the bottom cropped off: lighting doesn't match the rest.

Nice, maybe crop a bit more, the wrinkles in the bottom are a bit distracting.
