I have had BMX freestyle images published in a couple of different BMX magazines, so I hope this helps a bit. Your shote is panned fairly well, but I think that the big problem with your image is the subject matter. BMX/freestyle is a great subject, but timing plays a huge part in creating a memorable shot. When a person is shooting an action sport, the goal is (usually) to capture the participant at the peak of action. The rider in your shot is riding up the transition, he's preparing to jump into the air (or do a grind) which would make a much more interesting photo than what he is doing in this shot. That's just my quick two cents on your shot, if you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

Greetings from the Critique Club

I'm glad you got so many comments, especially after voting, which is rare for images not in the top 20. Most of it has already been said, especially with AP's excellent comments. I'll add some beyond those comments that I agree with.

The blue background gives a sort of paint pallete or painting perception, contrasting nicely with the guy and his bike.

You got pretty good motion blur for a fairly fast shutter speed.

If this wasn't Basic Editing I would recommend doing some burn on the overblown top part of the shot, and maybe on the back of the guy. Your only recourse would have been to find a better location to shoot from to avoid the highlight areas.

I like the capture of the concentration on the guy's face (despite the sunglasses covering his eyes) and the rotation of the bicycle frame.

You cropped to nearly a square format, which is risky and liable to get complaints here. I'm assuming it was to remove other distractions. It would have been nice to have the entire bicycle in the shot, or at least the guys feet. That's hard to do at BMX speeds, but maybe zooming out to a wider angle than you will crop to would give more flexibility in editing. Unless you were very close you had lots of wide angle left. In an action shot like this the slight loss of quality from cropping would be forgiven. I use the same lens as you do for most everything and it generally does very well, and is not the cause of my low scores.

The lighting doesn't look 'right' to me. I'm finding that bright stripe along the top distracting, and his face and head seem to be in the shade area of the shot.

To sum up the others:

Composition - OK
The line through his head - bad
The focus - light on the butt - drags the eyes

Overall an average shot without the punch required on DPC for high scores. I voted 5 for the above reasons.

Take care,

Tibi

For me it's how the lightest part of the biker is his butt, so my eye keeps being drawn back there instead of to his face and arms, where more of the interest should be :)

I do love the grafittied wall behind him, and I like (tho' some won't) the fact that the bike is blurred while he isn't. That said, he's sharp in comparison but not DPC tack-sharp.

i actually think its a cool, well composed shot, not worthy of a 5.0, but I can see why it didn't 'kill'... for one, I think the cool colors of the majority of the image (in the shade) contrast too much with the warm colors of the direct sunlight in the background... and aside from the the warmth/coolness factor, the brightness is also slightly unsettling. But the biggest thing i would say is the lack of 'critical' focus on the subject... motion panning is an all or nothing gig, if you're not 100% in focus on PART of the image, people will fault you for it... here, the head & face are a bit shaky and that will hurt you. Don't think it deserved as low as it did but those are my 2 cents

The straight line of the top of a wall going right through the top of the biker's head probably dinged this a lot in voting. Had he been a little lower or you a little higher, you could have cropped the bright area out, and it would be much more voter friendly. It's still a good, well exposed pan shot. Focus and following were spot on.

The yellow area and blown out areas detract from an otherwise good image.
