From the collection of a physics professor at William and Mary

The spinning object is called Barlow's Wheel or, in French, "Roue de Barlow" It is probably the earliest example of an electric motor. A puddle of mercury at the lowest point of the wheel completes the circuit through one spoke at a time. The flat horseshoe magnet provides the magnetic (V X B) force. I think it is about 1870.

I like the way the shadow looks like a man with a wheel.

I'll have to go look up some info on what this is. Looks interesting.

Wonderful shadow. Very interesting and intriguing object. The surface is a little buckled so it's a little distracting, as are the creases at the curved edge.

Excellent photo of a 19th century invention. Well done, especially the shadow. 9

You have managed to avoid what a lot of the other shots in this challenge have suffered from and that is ending up with a photo which simply documents the item. You have a great use of shadow and lighting here, which compliment what is already an interesting (and unusual) object. I don't know what this is, but I can only assume it's part of some light experiment. 8 from me.
