Challenge: Where's Waldo? III (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: St Kilda Pier, Melbourne, Australia
Date: Jun 25, 2007
Aperture: F 14
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/750
Galleries: Black and White, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Jun 24, 2007

Took this at St kilda Pier Melbourne with my superwide Sigma 10-20mm lens. A love the distortion. A kid just poked his head in the image when the seagull flew over and I thought it would be good for the challenge.

EDIT: Basically the usual stuff I have been doing of late. Duotone, dodge and burn, USM and on this one a little noise reduction to smoothe things over. I went for a little more contrast through curves. I am happy with it.

PREDICTION: Hard to say. Perhaps some won't like the distortion and other won't like the edit, particularly the sky. 6.4XXX???

POST: woo hoo! I was not even going to enter this challenge and put this in at the last minute. I want to thank the kid for looking out the window when he did! Thanks everyone for the votes and comments!

Greetings from the Critique Club

Great job here; a well deserved ribbon. Sounds like you had a stroke of good luck to get the bird flying by and the boy looking at just the right time, but you've certainly made the most of it here. The subject works great in black and white; color would have probably been distracting and certainly not have allowed the superb tonal control exhibited here.

The wide angle distortion gives an other-worldly, almost surreal feel, which is nicely complemented by your treatment of the sky. Yet the bird and kid ground the photo firmly in reality. The result is surprisingly effective.

I keep thinking it needs a bit more space on the left for better balance and because the bird seems a bit crowded. But then again, the crowding and slight imbalance probably contribute to the effectiveness of this photo! So it's certainly fine as is.

This is an outstanding photo. Thank you for submitting it!

Enzo: here you have outdone yourself. Beyond doubt one of the most impressive Waldo entries due to the comely perpective and then the kid and the bird. Congratulations on your Yellow.

Wow - looks high-def and really 3D-ish! The bird is just slightly distracting but fitting at the same time. Since there is no 9.5 I'll just go with 10

Fantastic, this is far the best one I have seen yet in this challenge. The person is just clear enough, not to obvious, not to hidden and the composition and tones are excellent. -9-

A wonderful shot and superb conversion and PS work. My favourite so far.

If I could ever produce a black and white conversion that was a s technically strong as this I would be a VERY happy person. I cannot find a single point of criticism. Not normally a big fan of 'through windows' shots but it work very well here in that it gives the boys features a slight lonliness and disconnect (almost melancholia) that you sometimes get in quiet seaside towns

Beautiful

Delightful image, full of energy and drama. "Waldo" was easily found, but that's not critical to me for this challenge. Instead, the image you have presented is interesting and has wonderful lines and flow. It actually draws me in, like a scary movie. I'm jealous that the seagull is so clearly in focus and yet has no perceptible haloing whatsoever (whenever I shoot flying birds they always have halos, even if I don't sharpen them)! This is a "10" from me.

I like the contrast between the hard clear structures of the building against the softness of the sky.
You are lucky, I experienced, the seagull only comes around once an hour...

Very nice composition and angle. Love the sky and the B&W conversion. Looks as if you dodged and burned a bit on the building and window and it looks great. also you hid waldo very well which helps the image. Nice work. Back to bump score.
