Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Recipe (Food) II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF 35-80mm f/4.0-5.6 III
Location: Fremont, CA
Date: Jan 9, 2006
Aperture: f8.0
Shutter: 25 sec.
Date Uploaded: Jan 10, 2006

I wanted to bake a cake at first but it was way too much work and of course I waited until the last minute to shoot this, so I also didn't have the time. I decided that my chocolate covered strawberries would probably photograph well.

Made them, took the shot in the kitchen. Put down a piece of black construction paper and then arranged the strawberries on a simple white, geometric plate. I positioned my tripod up and over the object and that was that. Not rocket science this time.

I read about this once - to put red lip stick on strawberries to enhance their ripeness for images - this would have helped in this case - unless these are suppose to be white strawberries? I wouldn't know - a great image though - love the symmetry - nice work :)

Good, well balanced composition. Good use of the white plate against a dark background. Clean and simple and straight to the point. One of my top picks in this challenge.

Yum chocolate and strawberries, two of my favorite foods, combine that with a great photo and you have success. I like the border on this photo it really compliments the photo. This is one of my favorites.

Love the symmetry, only complaint, wish the strawberries had more red, I know ... seasonal, 8

Awesome! (Riper berries would add more red & really dress this up. Otherwise, great shot!)

Well done, nicely arranged, the white plate really shows off the chocolate coating and emphasizes the white drizzle. Only thing I would have liked to see differently is for the strawberries to be more red at the tops and the greenery to be more perky. Overall and really great pic-Good luck

I love this image, it is very well presented. It not only looks good, but I think it will taste good. The layout and design is excellent.....and It is very well photographed.

Would have been better with strawberries that were red all the way to the stems, but I'm sure those are hard to find this time of year. I also might have flattened the leaves back out before taking the shot. A great arrangement though... and YUM!!!! Well done!

Everything looks great... the individual strawberries, the arrangement on the plate, the lighting, the border is a perfect finishing touch. 9

Excellent composition and presentation - would have loved to have seen this with fully red strawbs.

Very nice image - i like the colors, the contrasting choice of 'ingredients' and the plate. It might be nice if the strawberries were actually red, but that is a minor issue.

Excellent composition and arrangement. Black background with a white plate works very well. You might want to try and bring out the red color of the strawberries more even though there isn't a lot. More bright red with the chocolate would make the composition even better. The image appears just a bit soft focused.

It's a great image. The technical work is so good that I am critiquing the food itself- would like to see riper and fresher berries (red tops with moist, green stems)

Tasty and well executed. It has a poster-like quality to it. Good luck.

I like this shot. but found it a really small picture, making it large would have given it a little more omph. Personal opinion on food is - this makes me appreciate New Zealand strawberries ... as they are often red through to the top and tht looks nicer than the greenish top.

Nice presentation, is the focus just slightly off? Maybe it needs sharpening.
01/12/2006 12:24:19 PM
This looks delicious. I wish the tops of the strawberies were red for a better photo.

the Symetry is great! A really striking shot, wish it was a tab bigger (than 480x480) but its still one of my favourites in the challenge. Tasty looking too!

Your strawberries should be red. Not greenish/yellowish.
01/11/2006 10:55:39 PM
One of the few really clean, well-composed and decently-lit images in this challenge.

Try to use only the reddest strawberries for dipping..when they are hard to find or out of season, do something else. Always cook with an eye to seasonal freshness :)
01/11/2006 04:09:07 PM
Good balance and I like the symetricallness (is that even a word) ;0

Nice top-down perspective and symmetry is interesting - unusual in current food photography trends and therefore stands out - which is a good thing. Nice choice to keep the plate and background white and black.
