wow, she does actually have a foot....

The photograph is good..the suject is beautiful thats helps with presentation, not going to down play you at all but her left foot is is distorted becuase of the water..placement will help with this..and you should use either a flash or a reflector, to help with the shadows on the face..excellent photo..

Lacking some fill lighting on the right hand side but this is still a very good picture.

Nice color on the water. Hot chick, strange lighting/direction.

her face is kind of in the shadow.

I think this shot would be better if there was more light on the models face, and it wasn't taken from quite so far above her. Maybe a shorter depth of focus as well? Just a thought. Her hair looks good, and the pose is nice.

beautiful model, great composition, top mark!

Great shot, but, not enough light in the face, leaves a good looking subject with two black eyes.

too contrasty, her skin is not shown (use a reflector next time).5

very beautiful model, but the lighting was not in your favour in this shot. She is not well lit up and the ocean looks washed out (no pun intended) without very much colour.

Delicious! Maybe cropped a little too tightly at the top, and a fill flash might have lightened up the front side a little, but still a top shot - 8.

The model is a ten but there is too much shadow on her front side. I think for a cover and the setting she should be well lit. 8

Great shot. Need a relfector for the face (too shadowy), but still a great iimage. I'm a sucker for a beautiful girl. Jacko. 10 Good luck. May the feministrs refrain from voting. lol.

Beautiful chick. Would have been better light if she was turned slightly. As it stands her face gets too dark and we cant really see her eyes that well. Also, might have got a better angle by kneeling down more to her level...

Good composition and pose.

Hope that is your lady and she had a blast posing for the Sports Illustrated Edition. She definitely has "the look". I would have waded further out into the water to get more light on your subject's face and put a bit more space over her head.

I think she needs to be a bit brighter as the bright background is a little too dominant. Some fill-in flash, or a reflector might have helped. Otherwise a good photo.

Well... the photo isn't so special but what a subject! Where do you find a model like this? To make the photo better, a large diffuser would have elminated the overexposure on her right shoulder and a powerful fill-in flash or a reflector would have improved the overall lighting. On the other hand - who cares about technicalities with a model like this? Sure this is original?

Great pose, model looks great, nice composition, poor lighting - her face and body front are in too much shadow imo. Perhaps shoot same shot at different time of the day?

Hi buddy. I say buddy, 'cause I also submitted a swimsuit photo this challenge. Just thought I'd give you some pointers. First, you got yourself a great model. She has a nice pose. Could be better with another expression, maybe a tiny smile, but it's ok. Techniqualy, here's what you could do to improve it. First and foremost, change your focal lengh to reduce the depth of field. F5.6 will yield the best results, giving a nice focus on the model, and a very soft blur to the background. As soon as you start doing that, you'll improve you bathing suit shots by 50%. Next, use a flash. The flash can be mounted on your camera, but idealy, use an extension cord for your flash and have someone hold it for you on your side. The flash is being used to "fill the shadows". This means, reducing the contrast between the shadows and the highlights on your model. This will allow you to expose for the light areas without loosing detail in the dark areas- because the flash will light these up. You'll end up with a model being very well lit, with nice colors. Your setup is good, using the sun's light as a backlight. It's good to have the sun behind so your model doesn't squint her eyes too much. Unfortunately, in this shot, your model seems to have a hard time with the hard light and she's squinting her eyes. You can ask her to keep her eyes shut, and countdown before taking the shot. This way, she will open her eyes when you shoot and you'll loose the squinting effect. Last but not least, you might want to reconsider the crop of this photo and crop it a littlebit closer to the model, especially on the left side (maybe remove half of the negative space on the left). That's about it... I gave you a 6, but I beleive you had all the elements to pull off a 9 (with a littlebit more experience and the tips I gave you above). Hope I was of some help. Take care. DrJOnes. PS. Oh, by the way, congrats on taking a chance... shots with "sexyness" in them are usually not very well received on DPChallenge. Just know that you'll never win with a sexy shot, even if it's a very good sexy shot... Mine this week isn't doing very well, but has all the elements to be a top cover shot. People at DPChallenge tend to prefer very basic things- nothing too controversial. Women in bikinis are not well rated by the women and the prudes on DPChallenge.

I personally oppose women being used in this manner, but for this contest, I g ive this an 8. If the face were not shadowed it would be a higher mark. (Beautiful young woman who could be doing better things. - imho)

I could definitely see this on the cover... A couple of small issues you could address and improve the shot would be the blown-out crests of the breaking waves and the dark shadow across your model's face. While the highlight issue is a bit more difficult to address, you could possibly use a bit of fill flash to fix the problem with the shadows.

Very nice (hot!) model. Very questionable composition, there isn't room for the title at the top. The lighting on the left side of her body isn't good.

Not bad - lovely model, nice pose, good composition - the only that that I think could improve this would be a reflector to bounce a little fill light onto her face. But actually quite a good shot. Most shots I see like this wind up looking very ameteurish, but you've done quite well.

Wow! Just a teeny bit grainy, but sure meets the challenge well! Great model! My only gripe would be that the lighting could have been a little better -- obviously I don't know whether you used any sort of reflecter, but that may have helped brighten some of the shadow areas, and bring out more skin tone in her face.

Cute girl. I like everything but the poor light....3/4 of her is in the dark. :(

06/11/2003 08:41:33 AM
Yes, that'll work. The only thing I would suggest would be to have the model's exposed side to the sun and the shadow behind her. Her sun in her hair would be great and would highlight the rest of her body. Good shot! 7

Great pose, lovely model, but you need a little light on her FACE. The water distorts her left foot and shortens her thigh length.

it's a pity about the underexposure on the skin. I'd like to give a high mark for the model, the composition, the appropriateness to the challenge, but the exposure forces me otherwise.

Sexy... you definitely had a good model for this one. In terms of a photo that SI might use for their cover their are some problems here. The lighting here is not optimal... that is one thing that SI is very adament about for their swimsuit edition, a lot of the girl is in shadow, especially her face, which is bothersome. The border probably shouldn't have been added as I don't believe Si uses a border for their magazine, and if they do it's definitely not the thick, also the photo comes so close to the girls head that it almost seems to cut off some of her hair. I am also not sure where the title would go on this magazine cover, or any of the info on what is in the magazine. Good try though... could definitely start to be an inside photo for SI, but prolly not a cover.
