Hmm...semantics are the stuff of meaning and reality without which we may slip into a world of fantasy. Your PM (yes it was lengthy, wasn't it?) does not convince me that major wildlife photography competitions do not allow or in specific categories wholeheartedly embrace the hand of Man, and you'll forgive me if I prefer to go with the establishment on this matter. The definition of wildlife to me is the whole of the animal kingdom, an animal kingdom that includes insects; this challenge did not specifically exclude insects and as far as I am concerned it is up to the voters to make their own informed choice.

Anyway, DPchallenge is just a bit of fun so let's agree to differ and lighten up and enjoy our hobby. Have a nice weekend.

For a bit of obscure but thought provoking "humour" social commentary. I especially like "The Fence" which refers to the term WILDLIFE in a succint way.

Actually, this statement couldn't be more wrong. Check out the British Wildlife Photography Awards where there are plenty of examples of manmade objects interacting with modern wildlife, and even a dedicated category for "Urban Wildlife". By definition it is the 'life' that is wild regardless of the static background it chooses to be wild among.

Beautiful exposure, greens and red and blacks very well represented and accurate. Focus appears to be on the lady birds back (reflection) and not the "eyes" or front mandible area. Not fond of the eye catching grasses leading from middle left into the picture nor the wood "railing" (?) or hand of man (man made object) in a "Wildlife" challenge. Wildlife photography avoids these things, and presents wildlife without it, even whilst it is becoming more difficult to find true wild in it's shrinking environment. Although the challenge description gives some leeway in this regard I am a purist. There is a difference between a nature image (non or captive animal in a man made environment) and a wildlife image even though your subject is wild and obviously not captive.

Great shot, very different from the rest of the field. That's some red.
Well done.

You can always find some wildlife (I have a feeling insects were supposed to be excluded form the challenge, but happy to overlook that), wherever you are! Nicely captured with the perfect dof. For me, the ends of the blades of grass don't add anything to the photo.
