ummm...dunes are dunes, not dirt right?

I guess the Colorado trick is to find dirt and not snow...Can anybody say shovel?

Another challenge title that doesn't appeal. But I guess I could scrounge something just to get my new camera in a challenge.... I think I know just the place...

That's what I'm thinking. Sand is not the same as dirt. Anyone disagree?

That's right, but no doubt there will still be quite a few dunes shots.

The word 'Dirt' has a very different meaning in th UK. What in th US you call dirt we call soil or earth.

The voting is going to be controversuial on this one.

So dirt is understood as what plants grow in? Or is it what you find behind you closet when you move it away from the wall?

Or both?

There is a lot of dirt in Shanghai, but how to take a picture of it ... ?

No its definitely NOT what plants grow in - well at least in the UK.

OK my mind doesnt seem to work in the same way as Keiths :o( I am in the UK and my initial reaction to this challenge was "oh they mean the stuff plants grown in". Now I am VERY confused!

It's not? You said in the UK dirt = earth or soil, right?

*scratches head* What do your plants grow in?

I'm just playing the devil's advocate ;-) - to point out that the voting is going to be very difficult on this one.

There are already people saying that dunes are not dirt, all I'm pointing out is that a US based interpretaion of the term is not the ONLY definition.

LOL. Well to lessen the confusion for me, I'm going back to bed! Maybe when I wake up the challenge title might have changed! ;o)

Just for the record, my comments about dunes were meant to be semi-sarcastic. I realize dunes are, in most cases, made up of sand...and yet, I still expect quite a few shots of them.

But I understand your point. I could shoot a mountain and claim that it's just a big pile of dirt.

Interesting thread.... Dirt is certainly open to interpretation.. but my first impression was the stuff that plants grow in...

However....

You can 'dish the dirt' - Gossip about someone...

Step in 'dog dirt' - The little 'presents' that doggies leave behind on the sidewalks

Be 'dirty' - Slang for being rude, i.e. To talk dirty...

etc.

dirt could also be the stuff you dig up about a co-worker in order to get them fired ;}
