I was torn between this shot:

and the one that finished 5th, albeit with a very low 6.27 score:

In most respects, I prefer the outtake, if only for the startlingly low POV. That 10-22mm lens is simply amazing in its close-focus capability. Those shells are like an inch in diameter, maybe less. But I felt it might be too jumbled up for the voters, whereas the actual entry had a cleaner look.

Was I right?

Didnt vote but I think you made the right choice for your entry. The sky is very dramatic in the first pic but challenge related, the main subject is not as strong. I was drawn to your entry because of the stark contrast in texture and colors: smooth water vs. jaggy shells.

p.s. Robert, sent you an email with those pics.

Scores were pretty low in this one and i wonder if any of the stat hounds on the site have figured out which challenge had the lowest scoring top ten or top five entry.

I think you went with the right one for the challenge. Your outtake I'm guessing would have scored lower only because it may have been viewed as more of a landscape shot than the bits and pieces aspect.

Here are two of my shell collection images re the "outtakes" for this challenge.....Any comments welcomed, and I will return the favor.....

This is the one I entered, and very happy with this result, with a 6.148 score, and 9th position out of 223...... Thanks you so much for all my wonderful comments and votes.

I agree. And I love the soft touch of sky in your entry. I very much like the other, but I find the colours a touch strong.

This was my original idea for this challenge ...

But at the end I went for this one instead ...

here is my entry in color. I'm sure many people prefer it like this and it may have gotten higher, but I really like the high contrast version better.

not that i took it with the the challenge in mind but
just out of curiosity about the range of that expression 'bits&pieces'
i wonder if this would have fit?

Sometimes descretion is the better part of valor, sometimes youre just chicken.

I took these but didn't think they were good enough to enter.

I liked the concept, but wasn't satisfied with the lighting.

I'm betting that your knotted post would not have scored very well, as a single item was not well received by the voting population. Case in point, my entry (4.898).

These might have worked well as B&W images. I like the angle of the first image and the added words in the second image.

Decided at the last minute not to use this one.

Amazing shot. Congratulations!

Bear, your post processing skills are amazing.

It will be very helpful if you can also post the original pictures along with these pictures and the postprocessing steps so that we get to learn something from you.

Thanks.

Michelle

There is very little post processing on this shot, actually. The steps are listed in the photographers comments section of the image page, but the changes are quite subtle. It's about as close to straight-from-the-camera as I've ever submitted.

One trick I used a little bit was to open a selective color adjustment layer and choose the "white" channel, then throw in a smidge of yellow and a smidge of magenta (maybe +3 and +1 respectively) to add just a hint of color in the brightest areas of the reflection, which were a little blown out in the actual exposure. But the effect is quite subtle.

Here's the original; note that I cropped from the top. The extra luminance comes from the slight tweak of the brightness/contrast adjustment layer.

I came close to straight out of the camera until I started playing with the tinting in RAW and came out with a cool purple color which I loved.

By the way, this is "pieces" of my motorcycles rear fender and exhaust cover (2003 BMW F650GS). I don't think it did well because people didn't think it was pieces (even though there are distinct lines that seperate it) of anything. Oh well. The processing steps (albiet minimal) are on the Entered notes.
