I was out shooting yesterday, in RAW, ISO 200, faithful style, and got some VERY noisy pics - some, here and there. I mean ISO 1600 noisy at ISO 200...

Have you noticed anything weird like this on your 30D?

Here are 4 shots - converted from RAW and cropped at 100% - no other processing. the first 2 are fine, the others noisy, very noisy.

Any ideas on why?

did you change the exposure in the raw conversion?
05/07/2006 12:09:31 AM · #3
RAW isn't supposed to be noisy, remember...heck those shots are more noisy than my d70 shots shot in jpeg...that's really strange ;)

EDIT: in all honesty though, the problem looks to be your lighting.

I wonder if the exposure was locked on an incorrect setting and the RAW conversion just pulled the exposure up to expose for the faces? You should be able to reduce the noise in PP though, it doesn't look terrible.

Read my replies in this thread.

Your not the first 30D owner to report intermittent problems with noise.

bazz.

I thought the same thing. Are you using DPP? I don't know how or why, but when I bought RawShooter Pro and the 30D beta thing, the noise problem disappeared, it's incredible!

It seems DPP is the cause of the problems. I'm utterly disgusted that Canon would include such a vastly inferior program to deal with the RAW files. Terrible.

Many people are reporting this same thing on various photography boards. DPreview is rife with them.

The software that came with my Canon says it's not compatible with my camera (????) so I've been using Photoshop to open the files from the camera.

I'm shooting JPEG. I'm just not ready for RAW, but so far the only time I've experienced noise is at 1600 ISO and when I accidently under-exposed a picture.

PS can't (yet) open/read the 30D raw files.
DPP is the only option...Breezebrowser Pro will open them, but it only reads the embedded thumbnail and won't convert them to JPG.

There are hacks available to allow ACR to open and process the files.

It seems to be an ISO 200 thing...yes underexposing and pushing the exposure in RAW will increase noise, but I've got experience with a 300D, 20D and now the 30D, all in DPP...so i feel pretty sure to say it's the camera.

One person on another board seems to find it shoots cleaner in Adobe RGB (i've been using sRGB as that is what my lab uses).

ISO 800 is beautiful - as shot or even pushed alot- see here

NI would clean up that second shot just fine.

The differences there is that (while neither shot is what I'd call good lighting), the second set at ISO 800 is a relatively decent exposure...take the first one in the second set, you lit your subject...

In your original post, your subject is just standing there in a shadow.

I hate it when people blame their equipment. :sigh

Bibble is another option. It handles 30D RAWs fine and the new Perfectly Clear technology they've licensed is pretty darn good.

fwiw, I haven't seen any excessive noise on my 30D.

huh? Are you talking to me? Because Prof_Fate is the one that was talking about how good RAWis...I have the feeling I'm getting out of line so I'm outta this thread and the other one. good day.

RAW is great, but if you adjust a high ISO image too much out comes the noise.. a well exposed shot will look great :)

200 ISO is not high ISO. I don't suppose there's some place you can take the camera to have it checked over?

Rawshooter premium will read 30D raw as well. They have beta 30D raw support that works flawlessly.

i hate to tell you this but if your 30D is noisy...you have a bad copy. my first 30D was very noisy. even when i shot pictures on a bright clear sunny day. i shot two identical shots on my old 30D and my Rebel XT (same lens, same camera settings), the Rebel's images blew away the 30D. i sent it back to the dealer and they exchanged it for another one. my second 30D is awesome, awesome, awesome! even at iso 1600 noise level is still very low and usable. so call you dealer and exchange your camera if the exchange period hasn't expired. don't try to go through canon's warrenty...it's a waste of time and money.
