The garbage contest was my first attempt here on DPChallange... although I did eventually submit a photo for the contest, try as I might I never really found a pic I was satisfied with... I thought I had a great idea but never could get a good looking shot and my neighbors were probably on the verge of calling the police... here's a pic of the idea... personally I don't like the pic and didn't think it was worthy to submit, but I thought the idea was good... any thoughts on the idea? is this the kind of thinking it takes to get a good shot for the contest? thanks for your input...

I think the idea was terrific. Can't believe you really crawled inside a dumpster. Above and beyond the call of duty..

Great idea -- the flying garbage could have been a little sharper and lighter, but not much else wrong by me...I wouldn't have hesitated to submit the equivalent shot myself, had I thought of it -- but I try and submit every week and take the lumps, be they coal or sugar...

Reminds me of the time my mom accidentally threw her purse away when she was tossing the bags into the dumpster. Of course I was the one who had to climb in after it. STINKY!!

Of course, it depends on the dumpster...about 20 years ago I had a friend in Seattle who knew where and when the chocolate chip cookie store tossed about 8 pounds of assorted cookie dough every night, securely wrapped in about 6 layers of plastic wrap...
Unfortunately, "dumpster-diving" is now an established and necessary survival technique for far too many people throughout the world (including the USA) to qualify us as a truly civilized or humane race...

Ha -- this is great! I guess it's even more stunning to think that you went through all this trouble and didn't submit it!

That reminds me of a story, too. I accidentally threw out my favorite remote control (guys on the site will understand how traumatizing this can be). I spent a whole damn night digging through the dumpster in an apartment complex while people gave me some rather odd looks. I finally found it, and I still use it to this day (about 7-8 years later).

Anyway, to comment on the picture itself... As disgusting as this sounds, I think I would have added a little more trash to the foreground. The little bit that's there only gives the hint of the dumpster atmosphere, while a bigger pile on the bottom and the bottom right would have really made this a powerful shot.

Nonetheless, I agree that this is definitely "above & beyond the call of duty!"

well after the votes I am getting on the pic I did submit, I am starting to wish I had submitted the dumpster photo. Even though the pic I submitted is a better looking photo, I may have done better with the dumpster shot just because of the location... hah... I need to remember why I tried the dumpster trick in the first place... It was because I had read something on here recently about taking risks! I won't forget next time! And thanks for the input everyone. :o)
