I am interested in critiques on this image. I had thought IU might submit this to Negative Space, but decided to stick to my original conception. Therefore, any general comments and advice would be appreciated.

I like the picture a lot, the clarity of the wood is incredible. I don�t like the neatness of the knot, a sailor would cringe. I don�t see that the blackness adds anything; I think water here would have been good.

I think it's an excellent image... I love the way the rope leads me out of the frame... i wonder what its attached to... great shot....

Did you sharpen this photo? The woodwork looks a little sharp...

i like this image, but i think it would have been nicer if the wood wasn't so sharp. if it was softer, but the rope still had the clarity it does (i love how you can see the texture of it) then i think it would be pretty good. :)

I love the detail in the wood and the rope. The dynamic lighting is great. The blackness is a little odd, some texture might be nice, but I think the is in the 8-10 range.

That's inpart because of the resizing. Detail is lost. Also the one on top has the photoshop advantage.

I got to this thread late. The picture at the top and the picture later in the thread looke the same to me. The wood grain looks weird. Like trying to draw a diagonal line with a horizontal line. Also the area where I'm guessing where the water should be is black (and I turned my monitor brightness up all the way). If I had a better quality picture to look at I could think of some nice things to say, about the rope and the wood and the shapes of the knot and the angles and such.

Jakking, try applying some small amount of gaussian blur to the image to see if it will lighten up that effect on the wood... :)

OK -- I'm starting to feel like the socially awkward person who always manages to say the wrong thing and kills the conversation.

Here's my critique. I dig it. (I wouldn't have taken my shot if I wasn't interested in the subject.) I can see the difference, subtle as it is, between the two shots and the change in contrast was a good call.

Personally, I think I'd like the tie to be further in the corner (equally further down and further left) -- but that's very much a taste thing and I also don't know how close the object is that the ropes are attached to -- maybe that's as good as you could do. The fact that I can't see the water doesn't bother me because I know it's there. I think the black makes it very interesting and sets off the rope very well.

The biggest flaw is the jagged/pixellated nature of the grain on the dock. I wonder if that's a problem with the resizing, or if it's in the original. I think if you could clean that up/fix it, this would be something I could envision hanging in a gallery in a lake-based resort town.

Many thanks for all the comments; they are very valuable to a new photographer like myself and I hope we can look at more of each other's non-challenge photographs in the future.

The grain in the wood is remarked on by everyone. As I think I mentioned above, I made the decision not to sharpen the image at all in processing. I made that call while studying the 3 meg image direct from the camera. In other words, the same grizzled look of the wood is there in the best quality uncompressed image I have. I don't know what else to say.
