You'd need a graphics cardwith dual monitor support. There are few different ones you can get.
edit: THIS is what I use.

you can get a dual monitor card; if you are using LCDs you need to watch whether both connections are digital or if one is digital and one is analog.

I have the ATI Fire card, which like most ATI cards, has bad drivers. I have an older Matrox card that does this too. I've always liked Matrox and plan on replacing my ATI with one of the newer dual monitor Matrox cards.

You can also get a second card, PCI, if your existing card is AGP, and run one monitor off the AGP card and one or more off of the PCI card. See the Matrox site--it has lots of interesting configs.

There are of course, a number of different multimonitor cards.

someone has to say it.... just buy a mac.

The base level eMac and iMac don't have dual monitor support, but the rest of their systems have it built right in from the start. As a long time PC user, I cannot tell you how amazed I was when I first lugged a second monitor into my powerbook and realized that it expanded my workspace rather than just mirroring it like my thinkpad does.

Macs Rule!
Since you have experience in this area, maybe you can tell me what exactly I need to hook up a 2nd monitor? An adaptor?? I'm looking to add a cheap 15" for PS CS tools and such. Thanks for the info!!

And as for which monitor to get...

Check this one out: Grand Canyon Monitor

They basically took 4 of the 23" apple monitors and made 'em into one screen! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Most ATI cards support this. the best deal for a card with this features is this card ..

My powerbook has a standard VGA port on the back. I plugged in my wife's viewsonic LCD and it came up with my background color. It took me a minute to realize I could drag windows back and forth between the two monitors. There is also an option to mirror the regular monitor.

That card does not have digital out. I've never had an ATI card other than in a laptop which didn't crash regularly from driver bugs. My ATI Fire GL is a good example. I had an ATI wonder a long time ago and returned it because the drivers were so buggy.

The ATI cards have lots of extra features, if you need TV etc. But for rock solid multimonitor drivers and functionality, and a better price, try:

//shopmatrox.com/usa/products/datasheet.asp?ID=385

(No affiliation...I gave you the store link because it shows the price...)

I should add that I own several Millenium 550 and 450 card which work great, but not the one above--yet.
