| I'm looking to get a new tripod that will better support my gear. I also like to take macro shots and need something that will better allow me to do that. Any tips? what are others on here using? |

| Look at Manfrotto 055CXPRO3, a 3.6 lb carbon fiber tripod that supports 17.6 lbs, extends to 69", and features a center column that easily swings to a horizontal position for macro. $325 plus a decent ballhead. |

| If you don't need carbon fiber the plain 055PROBX legs are $160 do the same as Shannon describes and are rock solid, albeit a bit heavy for long carries. |

| I have the Vanguard Alta Pro and love it. So many different angles you can get into if you need it |

Another option is //www.indurogear.com I have the Induro CT213 and have been very happy with it, also bought their gimble head which I love.

| I would second the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 or 055PROBX, good balance between sturdy, strong and fairly light and portable and a head that suites your needs best, be it a ball, ball grip or three way pan/tilt. |

| i m pretty sure i have the 055PROBX. from manfrotto. I've used a canon 5dmkiii+abr800+ moonlight + canon 70-200 isII on it without any issues. i gave it a firm shakedown on account of fear. I used a ballhead from manfrotto as well. will share details when i get home. |

I bought the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 2 weeks ago... Love it!
Consider it as an option if the 055 is too tall for you... |

| If you're willing to spend $500, you might keep your eyes open for a Gitzo at a good price. I've seen the GT2541 down that low (sub $500 new), and it is lighter, has a heavier load capacity, only slightly shorter, and the build is much better. The Manfrotto is great and I think you'd be happy with it, but some price shopping and you may find a great deal. Depends how soon you're looking to purchase, I suppose. Gitzo also has the explorer series, which has the tilting center column, as well, but honestly, while it is convenient, it does compromise stability significantly (this is true of the Manfrotto ones, as well as the Gitzo Explorer, and also the Giottos tripods with the same feature). |
