Why is that?

For Adamus, you first resize your image to twice the size you want it to be. Apply the sharpening filter 2 or 3 times. It will be an over sharpened mess at this point. Then, resize to desired size, and it will leave a really nice sharpening to your photo. But, because you are effectively cutting the number of pixels in half, you cant really print anything larger than a 5x7 or 8x10. I also havent tried to print them, so I imagine that they will look over sharpened after printing as well.

What he said. It's generally a very web-specific thing, tied into screen resolution, which is much lower than normal printing resolution.

I would be happy whether or not there is an increase to the px size if the file size can be bigger. It some times hard to get the file size under the limit with out losing too much detail in the compression or if that does not work resize it smaller once again losing some detail.

It appears that people want the bigger size pics. Well that is according to the poll....400 votes YES and 102 votes NO

Lots of new laptops have only 800px high screens, so an 800px high image will make me have to scroll and loose the impact of the image since some screen space is taken up by the OS or browser bars etc. 800px wide is no problem.

I'm just one person so I'm not too invested really but yeah, 800px high pictures will look worse on my screen.

Well, the easy solution to this (if they go to 800px high) is that the score would obviously be impacted because you can't view the entire photo at once. If I have to scroll to see a challenge entry I'm thinking it will probably impact the score I give it. :-/

There's a Firefox plugin that allows you to resize images by spinning the mouse wheel; that would take care of this problem, for those as have it...

Most modern browsers have the ability to zoom in and out. Zoom In (Ctrl++) Zoom Out (Ctrl+-)

Oh yeah. Forgot about that. Never use it, but I guess I could switch to viewing at 75%. Kind of defeats the original intent I guess AND makes it more difficult to vote (switching zoom % back and forth).

It's still a viable option for the minority that cannot view the image at full size.

Zooming in and out affects picture quality though. The resizing algorithms the browsers use aren't usually as good as what photo editing software does and if you're resizing by scrolling you usually end up being at something like 71.5% size etc. which can lead to diagonal lines becoming jagged or blurry etc. So no I wouldn't say that's a satisfactory solution.

My opinion on that is, if someone bought an 800 pixel tall screen for whatever reason (arms too weak to carry a larger laptop; drive a Smart Car and can't fit a regular laptop into it; have a fetish for small electronics...) it's a trade-off.

People who bought these mini laptops brought it on themselves, and they should man-up and be accountable for their own decisions, rather than cry and make the rest of us pay their stupid-tax.

ETA... for crissakes, Bear, can't you post a freaking quote properly? :-P

I am not so sure why this is being debated here. It is a poll asking a question. Just like the last poll that asked if they should change the size to 720 or 800 or leave it as is with a majority vote in favor of a size increase which has yet to be established. I am sure this new poll will be in favor of 800x800 but until I see it actually take effect, I am going to assume it is just another poll to gather popular opinions and perhaps get a few of us to feel good about being here for awhile longer. If you sit back and be patient, I am sure another poll will surface in a year or so.

I don't think anything will change around here because everytime it is suggested people say they will quit or start voting lower scores because they do not like the change being suggested.

Internet Explorer already has this built in. Simply hold down the Ctrl key and spin your mouse wheel (forward to enlarge, backward to shrink).

Im all for the 800 increase, but I think all challenges, basic or advanced should be the same size!
Move everything to 800 and ill be a happy camper. Monitors are only getting bigger and cheaper.
Id guess most@ people will be on a 19-22inch monitor now.
Those on 15 and 17's upgrade, dont complain, keep with the times ;P Lets no live in the past

Errr I was just pointing out that there are a whole bunch of computers now that have the smaller screens so it's not right that all screen resolutions are huge these days.

I figured I should speak up to mention that just to bring up that point of view. I know that's not the majority and although I haven't looked at it I'm sure the poll is in favour of the 800px image size.

I personally have a smaller laptop because I have to commute with it to work either walking or on a bus, I live in the centre of an easily walkable city with perfectly adequate public transport and I haven't driven a car in 7 years. So you know, different people, different strokes, different computers.

I can resize the browser just by pinching on the trackpad (yes I'm on a 13" macbook pro) but it does reduce the picture quality and make it more blurry. Which is something you can live with, but again I just wanted to bring up my point of view.

In case you haven't heard, a lot of people are just a little short on disposable income right now, enough that "disposing" of a piece of working equipment is not a practical option, however much of a welcome boost to "the economy" it might provide; it also adds to the glut of toxic waste we're experiencing ... I believe in using stuff until it doesn't work any more.

This is a digital photographic challenge site. We use technology.
I agrees on using something to its not longer userable. SO make do with what you have? not make other people deal with what you have if you get what I mean :)
Im sorry but just because someone cant afford it doesnt mean the rest should suffer.
Doesnt matter anyway, the poll shows what the people want. 4/5 people have spoken :)
10/15/2009 05:59:31 PM · #70
It doesn't matter what image dimension or file size limits are in effect because there hasn't been anything worth looking at since I stopped entering challenges. I guess I'll have to start entering again so you guys can have something worth viewing on your big fancy monitors. ;)

I would sincerely hope that people do not vote an image lower simply because they have to scroll.

I'll vote 1 on anything less than 800 pixels vertical!
