hehe, I did think about 'borrowing' your idea but decided against it. My fire shot got as high as 4.988 before going back to 4.8 I really liked it until I saw it on my pc at work - must try harder.

oops, now down to 4.6 but never mind I got 4.2 in my first challenge, improvement is all I seek.

I think the response to mine is better described as "incredulous."

Maybe it's just my mood, but I'm not impressed with these fire shots at all

Mine is getting the best score I've ever received (6.0 w/73 votes). Not a blue ribbon score by any means, but I'm very pleased because I'm improving. However, as two of the 3 comments pointed out, there is a serious editing flaw.
The sad part is, that I submitted the wrong photo. Same photo, w/out the flaw. So I wonder how I would be doing if I had paid attention. Guess that's what happens when you procrastinate, and rush to submit.

There were a few shots that were very nicely done, but overall I will have to agree with most that this is a weak challenge. Quiet a few cliche shots, with very few that had a lot of thought in them.

I'm still hopeful though, this is one of the higher entries in a challenge I've had, so I might be getting better. (joy)
Just wish there were more comments.

71 votes, would trade my 4.7 for more comments, just one this far - how am I to learn?? more comments please.

btw, I comment little right now as I'm still learning and my comments would be more on 'appeal' than technique.

I have a suggestions... since there were not as many entries in this challenge & most seem somewhat disappointed of the shots entered, can we take a bit more time looking at the shots & leaving comments?

I know my shot is doing not so bad but not so good wither at a 5.5. Mine is a bit subtle & will require a bit more than the 2 second drive by that most of us do. I will certainly spend more time looking at shots this week & am gonna try to leave a comment on each of them. Something insightful & more to it than, cool shot, good idea, etc... the usual comments that I tend to leave bc of lack of time.

Wish me luck!

Here's wishing you luck Rooster, and everyone else.

I'm on a slow downward spiral. I have spent most the day at 6.3###
on a roller coaster of scores. Almost as soon as I almost clear the 6.4 mark I get a splattering of 4's to knock the score back down
and start the climb again. Now it appears to be in decline and not coming back from 6.2###.

Please don't mistake this for whine.... I am ever so grateful to the members who have voted no matter what score was given; this is my best entry to date and I feel wonderful about it.

Well I am a little dissappointed in my score so far, although I am getting used to that now.

But I know for a fact that I did try hard and I took the shot with no manipulation whatsoever I was almost cooked in the process but I think it shows fire very nicely It is in focus and I like it.
All I did was crop and downsized and added a border

It doesent help when there is only one comment as to why it is not liked.
O K I could be that like so many of the images it actually shows just 'Fire'
Some of the shots are obviously manipulated and I applaud those who can do such art. Because it is an art in itself.
I am still very new in my knowledge of how to change shots around having a basic sort of camera as well.
But if someone asked me to repeat the shot I could do it in a couple of shots not 300 or 500. I'd go mad if I had to take that many in order to get the desired effect plus I just havent got the time.
I do strive for perfection and almost achieved it a few times (In my mind) but unless I change my camera I dont see me doing anything amazing But I am still happy to belong to such a group who are very very talented. Great work guys!
But please leave some more comments. It does help me as a beginner.
as long as they are not Hmmmm and Well! LOL!

I've been trying to comment mostly on images that I consider average. Myself, I seem to be "Joe Average" and usually don't get many comments unless my image sucks badly, it's off topic, or when it's a little better than average. So on my average images I don't feel I'm learning a whole lot. Just hoping more people will follow suit and fill this comment void for average images.

I haven't voted yet, but it seems that a good fire shot (and creative) is difficult. At around 6:30pm last night I thought gee, maybe I should try something for the Fire challenge, so I started playing with a match on a matchbox. No luck. Then a lighter, trying to capture the sparks, no luck.

So then my wife says, why don't you try lighting a can of hairspray with a lighter and capture the flame that it produces... :) Love that idea... so instead of hairspray I try the carburator cleaner on the shelf in the garage. My first test fire shoots a flame about 8 feet long. Pretty cool I think... Now let's setup the camera and try to capture a neat shot.... After about a half hour, no luck. Although I had a lot of fun. :D

LOL, to tell you the truth I was worried about it at first (although I did this when I was a kid I think), and wore a work glove just in case some of it flew onto my hand. :)

Remember kids. Don't try this at home. ;-)

I was just listening to this Toadies song this morning on the way to work. How inspirational!!!

I Burn

Driftin' upward. Gently lifting. Lazy on the wind.
Rollin' over. Turnin' slowly. Beginning and the end.
Fire is bright. Fire is clean. Never so alive.
Smoke is freedom. Flame is mercy. I am free tonight.

And I burn. I burn.

Stoke the embers. Cleanse the spirit. A prayer in every spark.
Feel the lick of bad religion. The finish and the start
In the beginning, we were smarter 'n flame was heaven-sent.
Through the ages, we got stupid. Now we must repent.

And I burn. I burn.

Sift the ashes for reminders. Stony things remain.
Tooth and bone, unimpressive.
I have left these things
Because fire is bright. Fire is clean, efficient and divine
Tooth and bone. Charms and dolls. I am free tonight.

I burn the air you breathe.
I burn the air you breathe.
I burn the air you breathe.

I burn.
I burn.
I burn.

As I sift through the fire entries, I am reminded why I joined this site: these images are fun to look at and think about. As I was doing that I wondered to myself:

How many people used flash when they took their pictures? I'm asking because I think that might be the difference between getting flame that has detail and flame that is more uniform.

Or, is there another trick I haven't thought of?

Thanks

Just back from a 2 day business trip must get down to my voting.

Personally I will try to comment as much as possible, a promise I made to myself after the last Challenge.

The reason I restate that is because my Fire entry has 125 votes and unless there is some "last minute" reviewing by members I am at a nicely average 5.2xxx BUT only 2 comments and welcome though they are, they in no way give me any feedback as why my entry is considered so average.

So, I look forward to seeing the final outcome of a Challenge that some have stated lacks creativity and therefore does not inspire comment.

Heh ho, back to the voting!

:~)

PS To site admin ~ I wonder if the vote of anyone commenting can be automatically shown?

PPS Just spotted that someone has re-voted downwards ~ again, it would be helpfull if there were more comments!
