Doh... there's no pleasing some voters I guess. I shot the same big blue thing, trying to make it look more sea-like and interesting, but I'm paying for that big time. :)

Ok, laughing here, Louis! Burlington and Toronto and Lake Ontario.....guess perhaps, we should have strapped a shark fin onto someone and maybe then, we may have fooled those who wanted "sea shots"! *grin* Race you to the Atlantic! *smile*

I was hoping for a 6 but after the first day of voting was on 5.7

It's looking better this morning though.

Okay -- where's the thread for the most unbelievably unhelpful comments?

Don't you just love this one...I mean what is it saying?

"I can see where you were going with this photo and I think it could have really turned out nice, but I don't really like how it looks now. 5."

Is this not a gem????

BTW I'm at 6.04 - clinging on with my toenails!!!!

I don't know if it's that's terrible. At least your photo was looked at citically. Just to play devil's advocate, you might be able to take something from it by looking at your own photograph differently, if possible. It might actually be an interesting exercise to to see it from the commentor's point of view and analyze what it is about your photo that would elicit such a reaction.

Thanks Louis - I really do usually value criticism if it's actually specific and actually tells me SOMETHING, and I'm never offended by personal likes/dislikes and I am quite an objective person - why else put your images up for voting and comments??? I had some excellent insights on the "Waldo" challenge recently which showed me exactly where I went wrong - very helpful.

...but this comment doesn't point to anything... what does 'I don't really like how it looks now' mean? I would like to know what value you would find in a comment like that on your image Louis? Is it the lighting, the composition, the subject, the angle, the processing...what? I checked the critic's profile and he/she makes an actual point of being contentious and seems to be inviting reaction from comments... so I guess I'll take it from whence it came - just wish I knew what "the commentor's point of view" was in this instance:-P

But I read you and understand you're trying to be philosophical with this Louis...thanks.

ROFLMAO Faery!!!!

I'm sorry, but this comment struck me as really funny!!! I wonder if this person posted this comment while half asleep????!!! *grin*

I can't help but to agree with you Faery! I'm so used to getting comments like that now that I am learning to just shrug my shoulders, say...."HUH????", scrunch up my eyes, then pass it by! I think that may be what you have to do with this one!!

One thing that I will point out that may help and something that I have to also remind myself as well from time to time....there are a number of voters in here from other countries and perhaps, the "translation" of it gets lost and can't be duplicated in English???

Sorry, still chuckling here! But, I'll leave you with a comment......

"I think this photo could be improved. I don't know how. I'd like to see it with a different background and foreground and middle ground. And the focus may be off. Is it blurry. I don't know. Could you maybe turn it black and white? But, maybe, it's better in color. Maybe, you need a new camera. It's a good photo though."

:)))

Well, don't misunderstand me, I am sometimes irked by less-than-clear comments, or simply "I don't like this" comments. And I don't know, if given the identical comment on a photo of my own, that I would find any more value in it than you did. Even a such a comment, though, tells one something, since one's photo has elicited that reaction. Maybe I'd try to simply use it to look with a different eye at my picture, a more literal eye than a photographer is usually capable of viewing his/her own work with. Maybe it would be useful for me, maybe not. :)

How balanced! That's matching my prediction - if it stays that way I'll be very happy.

Ahhhhh.......Louis.........you're trying to turn lemons into lemonaide, huh? *smile*

Sometimes, there are comments that just cannot be used in any rational or helpful sense! Admit it! *grin* This was one of 'em!

I find that if I look at every comment and take them all seriously, I'd be so confused that I'd give myself a case of "shutter block" and wouldn't snap another shot except of family birthday parties! *grin*

Let's remember that everyone's eye is going to be different in tastes and one's comments are going to be voiced on those "tastes". Technical comments are helpful, taste comments aren't necessarily. And, if we base our "style" on one or two other people's "tastes" then we are doing ourselves a disservice.

Just my 2 cents' worth! :)

It is a shame when a photo meets the challenge of Sea (Not Land) that so many come up with all different reasons not to vote the photo to the challenge. Having been through the challenge there is a lot of land being used.

I am happy. Would be great if it would get up to a 5.5. But I will settle for a 5.4. Better than the 4.33 that it started out with. Look forward to seeing the outcome.

Least useful comment I've received; "nope".
I have commented on some pictures that it didn't look like a coastal area, but the most I deducted was 1 point as long as there was a lot of water. Many of the real seascapes had very little water showing. In fact I believe I scored lake/river shots higher on average because there were some very good quality ones.
