I'm not sure what the second image is, but the colors are great. Your entry is good, but I think it lacks some of the visual drama of the other image.

Am I alone on this?

Not unsurprising. I think many people were more focused on the macro element than the abstract. As an unfair generalization, many are more comfortable knowing what an image is, so abstracts tend to fare poor to mediocre with many DPC members.

so it seems I should have used the outtake. live and learn. I figured the outtake was too "blah". I liked the submission... hmm... interesting to see the differences in opinions. :)

I agree... too much focus on figuring out what the object is. Look at the comments, 90% are just guesses.

well... I got mostly 5s on my entry. a couple ones and threes, lots of 4s... quite a few 6s. But interestingly, someone REALLY liked it... I did receive one 10. :)

Thanks. :)
I liked it. It's actually going to be hung on the wall. in my office/dining room, I'm going to be printing out my favorites and hang above the computer. More inspiration and a collage of work. :)

I had to resize then upload the shot of my outtake.

It was a remote control car, the nose of it.

Here's what the whole car looks like:
