i have a canon 5d mark II with windows XP.
i cannot see the raw files.
i have downloaded windows raw picture viewer TWICE and it does not work!!!
the raw previews change to the new icon, but when I click open, it says "failed to load the image"
im furious about this.
i have breezebrowser, but that' not how i want to work.
i want to see them in XP.
if you have 4 jobs and you can't see them, you start by putting them in a temporary folder, then open them in capture one 6, where it starts making folders and previews. then when you sort them later, you have to delete all the capture 1 self generated folders, and it locks up the program! i need to start with files sorted into the correct folder from the git go.
thanks alot.
i have cs3 so don't use bridge. my XP is from 2003 and i am on borrowed time.

I guess customer demand is not a factor... Seems awfully shortsighted.

Rick (Husband) finally found a site by Nikon that stated that they have NO PLAN TO DO A 64 BIT CODEC...at all...amazing... |

| Yeah, I bit the bullet and got the easy viewer as well. Which really chafes, because the big boys REALLY should be serving their customers and keeping up with the technological times. It might be some warped angle to get us to use their proprietary bullcrap viewer program, but that would be pathetic, since it's free. I have to say I'm rather miffed that I had to spend money so I could see my own darn images. |

It still amazes me that Canon and Nikon have not released 64 bit codecs. 64 bit Windows has been mainstream since the release of Windows 7 over a year ago. All I can figure is some kind of marketing ploy. I can't believe they fail to see the customer demand.
As far as losing your files goes, my camera rolls over after IMG_9999. All I do is keep my shots organized in folders labeled with date and a brief description to identify the session. I only rarely have a conflict of file name if I am putting shots from different dates in the same folder. (Such as my potentials for the upcoming "best of")

I just recently went through this with my Windows7...sigh...I've had to do a 3rd party software to get the Codec...Nikon IS NOT GOING TO SUPPLY IT FOR WINDOWS7 according to current postings...so I've bit the bullet and gotten the 3rd party software (on trial now) will probably go with Fast Picture Viewer that Steve mentions as it's cheaper by $5 (well...five bucks is five bucks)
can't believe that Nikon would do this to their customers... |

I feel your pain... the ever-changing, proprietary RAW formats are the bane of photographers everywhere. All it would take to eliminate this mess is for the manufacturers to agree to write the instructions for decoding the file into the header data. This would mean that a program written to decode RAW files would be able to deal with current and future models from all complying manufacturers.
There already is a format (Adobe DNG) that can achieve this, but only a couple camera manufacturers use it.
As for the loss of images, if the file numbering is resetting to 0001 unexpectedly, either there is something actually wrong with the camera, or a memory card is buggering it. The camera stores its count on the card, and if a card is used with multiple cameras it is possible for one camera to pick up the count from the card used by the other. It's possible your camera is picking up a very high count form a card, then "rolling over" to zero.
One thing that can help with keeping images straight an avoiding loss is to use a good organizational tool. My personal recommendation is Adobe Lightroom, although the cost may be higher than you want to spend. It is, however, one of the best organization tools on the market, and also one of the best RAW converters. |

Why have Canon chosen to make their customer's lives so difficult? I bought a G11 in May 2010, and ever since then I have been trying to find a way to view the CR2 files created by the camera. No luck in 9 months, and today I discovered that thanks to Canon's incompetence in this matter, I have lost around 900 photos - I have no idea where they are, I must have deleted them months ago because I thought I'd already saved them. The G11 will name files numerically, then randomly start at 0001 all over again, for no logical reason.
Why can't Canon take a note from Nikon's book and make it easy to be able to view RAW files inside Windows Explorer. My D80 came with a CD that contained all files for viewing RAW images - just click, install and VIEW them. No searching for an answer to a problem created by the camera manufacturer, no loss of 900 photos.
Sorry for the rant, but I've now come to the end of my tether with this :( |

We have a codec with our own thumbnail implementation for 64 bit and 32 bit versions of XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

I have the same experience, even with Windows XP SP3 and the latest wic codec from Canon, I can't see the thumbnail. with Nikon .NEF wic codec, I don't have the problem. I understand perfectly mirdonamy about the explorer stuff, whatever if there are nice software to view the cr2, from the explorer it is convenient. Windows SP3 with WIC support introduced the technical solution, but for an unknown reason Canon didn't choose to support the thumbnail interface. I work in a software company ( vso-software ) and we have official agreement from Canon to use their native SDK that we use already to support .CR2 Raw file from our products , so in a few days we will develop our own WIC codec, and it will be able to generate the thumbs in explorer for latest digital camera bodies ( I have a 40D myself, waiting to have the 5D Mark II )
I have started to work on native .CR2 format when I bought the 400D and the powertoy's microsoft RAW viewer wasn't working anymore.
So please be tuned, I will let you know in this thread when I will have something available for the public, it seems I won't be the only one to use it :)

I use the faststone viewer and it's great and fast - and costs zip. Since LR is such a pig on this machine I use this to pre delete the crap and only import what is worth while.

Even though I have lightroom and CS3, I still like to use a windows browser to look/move photo files. I have struggled to get windows explorer to read my *.CR2 files from my 40D. Supposedly you can download the updated codecs from the manufacturer that will permit viewing RAW files. You can find the codec page here //www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/codecs.aspx I tried this and my XP-based OS still wouldn't let me see the thumbnails in explorer. Aaaarrrggghhh
OK, next I found the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP. available at //www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/default.aspx and could not get it to work to view images. I stumbled upon a free windows program called windows live photo gallery //get.live.com/photogallery/overview
Finally, it lets me look at all of my photo files, RAW or not. Give a try to each and see how they work. All of the above files are free. |

Yup. There's always DPP which came with the camera. ;o)
Back on topic:
I didn't search too hard for the thumbnail viewer when I first got the camera. Just used Lightroom.
Now I'll have to check out the link posted. Though looking at the specs in the link I don't think it's up to date enough to support the 40D.
