I'm watching others' scores with such interest for this challenge. My score was around 6.2 the first day, and then it started dropping at the speed of light to where it is now -- barely 5.7. I've never had one drop that dramatically. I'm really disappointed, but I really like my picture, and at least one other person does too because they picked it as a favorite :) I guess that will have to be enough this time :)

Ok, accepted!
It's my first photograph and now I know better, how this challengething works ;-)

For me, someone has to be playing an instrument or singing for it to be live. Except for a player piano. They play themselves.:) Doesn't matter if its on stage, on the street, in your backyard, or in a studio.

You're right. But playing in a studio is also "live" in this moment of playing! ;-)
Ok, I don't want to quarrel. I'll learn from this next time. I think my attempt to the "dairy" challenge is better ;-)

With the "live" subject matter, isn't it also a situation where you are going to have lots of background versus a studio shot where you can move stuff around? Just wondering, cause I got a complaint about the background being too busy and I'm like "hello???? This is LIVE?"

Ok, I'm off my soap box now and going to bed.

Night all....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I know why mine didn't do better. No one understood my artistic, out of the box, sensibilities. It was way beyond the humble scope of the challenge. The voters just look for eye candy.;)

Why has this to be totally wrong?
When an instrument is not plugged in, there is no chance to produce any sound! So the music can't be "LIVE"...

I think this challenge engendered some hard feelings about the "closeup instruments" because those shots can (although they may not be) be posed with detailed control of the lighting, background, etc. Someone who went to a "gig" had little to no control over this and so the results are going to be, generally, of a different quality. It's hard to have gone to a concert, done the best you could with the lighting and equipment you had, and feel you need to compete with a shot done in a studio with artificial lighting...

But on the other hand, it would be difficult to communicate the atmosphere of live music with a close-up of an instrument even if this were the case.

Reading between the lines, I would say the intention was to 'get-out-and-shoot', and not sit at home with a posed shot of an instrument.
Maybe it is more ambiguous for those who don't have english as a mother tongue, but 'live music' has a lot of connotations and really means music that is formally being performed to an audience. You can pull the semantics apart, but when you talk about live music to most people they will think of it in that context. Perhaps because I'm also a musician, I'm also used to thinking of live music in that way. It has to be live! Live is not the same as studio, it is the exact opposite. If you buy a CD of a musician playing 'live', you know exactly what to expect.
I think people here just like to argue semantics so their shot is valid when they haven't been able to go out and grab a shot more in keeping with the spirit of the challenge.
Live music is all around us to every end of the earth, and I find it hard to believe that people couldn't find live music somewhere near them with enough effort to photograph.

I'm a musician, too! I've a lot of experience with that topic. I play piano, drums, bass guitar and guitar - sometimes viola...
(Very practical when I play in my band and one musician is ill.)

I'm just going to wade in here ... and yeah, this is a rant.
WHAT'S NOT LIVE ABOUT CLOSE UPS OF INSTRUMENTS???

If the challenge was meant to be for "LIVE GIGS," I have no doubt the wording of the challenge would have specified live gigs with lots of laser lights, smoke effects and glammed up performers.

I'll wade in too, THERE IS NOTHING LIVE ABOUT CLOSEUPS OF INSTRUMENTS.
If someone can bee seen playing the instrument however, it suddenly magicly becomes live, what is so hard to get?

But those getting the most out of an actual performance are those who should get the highest score in this one IHMO.

rgo: I like the shots in your profile though :)
