WPL Integration
Goals
- The process should be completely streamlined such that there's no burden of work on any one individual or group of individuals.
- To keep the same fun, exciting, and driving forces in play that made Seasons 1-4 of the WPL such a success.
- To consider all potential improvements, but consider how they will affect the two goals above and our mission statement.
Season 5
Overview
- Team Limits:
Team Creation
- Should existing teams be Grandfathered in?
Week-To-Week
Season 6 And Forward
Team Creation
- Should teams from the previous season get preferential treatment as far as getting into the next Season?
Notes And Ideas
Main Concerns
- How to make the WPL more of an interactive learning experience for the participants? - How to make the system fair for everyone, and prohibit team voting? - Whether WPL should be based on a separate, additional challenge or run as it has been now? - How to formulate (and possible reformulate teams) if necessary? - The possibility of WPL being a sister-site to DPC?
Below each key item are discussion points that have been brought up pertaining to each.
Making the WPL a Learning Experience
- allow teams to work together to get advice on composing and post processing their photographs before the challenge. - gets tricky because you don’t want people post-processing FOR someone else. - how to contain the sharing to just team challenges (if those challenges are separate), meaning that once we sanction “group efforts” on individual shots for team challenges, we don't want this to trickle over to solo challenges (again, if they are separate). - each team could have a private forum thread to discuss images and get feedback. - would SC monitor these forums?
Fairness and Team Voting
- Intra-team voting would disabled completely (you'd see your teammates images at the bottom of the voting window like you see your own now). - Or intra-team voting enabled, but all votes on teammate images would be tossed at rollover.
Extra Challenge
- A weekly Friday challenge that would be ONLY available for teams - The upside to the team challenge is that those not on a team wouldn't feel like they (the teams) had an unfair disadvantage by being able to discuss entries. - The downside is that non-team members may feel left out or “cheated” out of challenges. - Ribbons for team competition should be different, or maybe trophies. - If we don’t separate challenges, will people not on a team feel like they are unfairly up against 6 people who have had Larus mentoring them? - Part of the fun is to enter more than one challenge per week and let your personal best count for that week. - Extra challenge would increase our workload, make WPL even more exclusive to non-players.
Teams
- If you're on a team with 6 other people in season 1, then you cannot be on a team with any of those 6 in season 2. - Switching keeps things dynamic, and teams semi-fair. - People get comfortable and happy with the same group and might not want to change after a season. - Teammates form good friendships and enjoy working together, don’t want to switch. - If we chose to stay with the same group, then Bear, Goodman, BryanBrazil, Scalvert, etc. become off-limits as mentors to others. As a learning tool, that's a serious downside. Mixing up the groups offers more people more opportunities to learn. - Perhaps complete re-formation isn't required, but teams have to give up players for free-agency, and draft from a pool of folks desiring to be on a team. We could have a simple draft-pick system, where the bottom-finishing teams get early draft choices, and perhaps first choice of free agents. - Even if teams must be reformulated, members should get to choose their own teams. - Part of the camaraderie is based on team name.. people might not feel the same love for their team if it doesn't represent who they are as a person.
WPL as a Sister Site
- same editing rules, layout, workings, usernames - different forums, profile pages and challenges - could make clearer specific rules for teams - DPC folks who didn’t want to play wouldn’t feel as left out - Easily ignored - Loses, I think, half the appeal of the WPL, which is improving your own average and your own portfolio on DPChallenge - Sister site would distract form DPChallenge challenges.
