Six months ago, I found this stick, which had floated ashore near here. It’s too small to be called driftwood, and “driftstick” doesn’t seem right either. I left it where I found it, but it haunted me. Again a few months ago, I found the stick.
I picked it up and this time and decided I would see if there is a photo hiding in my stick somewhere. My wife wants to use it for the handle of a purse she’s designing. So when I let it sit on the counter, or the corner of my desk … I had to be continually watchful over it. For months I’ve looked at it in different lighting, from different angles, under varying moods.
For 30 days, more or less, I’ll live on the lakeshore where I’ve lived for the past 6 years; where I found my stick. Today, I realize I’m running out of time. I’ve been sick for a while now – it colors my mood. I won’t be living here much longer. If I’m going to memorialize my stick, now is the time. If not now, when? I’ll miss living here.
