 I went down to my local beach for the third night running, hoping to find the tide further in and better waves to suit the long exposure. The tide was miles out again but it was blowing a gale tonight (and absolutely freezing it was too!) and the waves were a big improvement. Finally, I'm pleased with the result of my labours!

Editing: Tone-mapped from single RAW (deliberately overexposed to preserve shadow detail), B&W conversion in channel mixer, levels layers, USM and some dodge and burn.

I have to say straight off that I am not generally a fan of HDR, though when it's used subtly it can be extremely effective. It's my first attempt at tone-mapping and I think it's worked in my favour with the monochrome image.

This is the first time in a while I've entered what I think is quite a DPC-friendly image - though it's not necessarily what I aspire to photographically, it's certainly the best seascape I've produced to date and I hope the discomfort I've put myself through on an extremely cold and windy beach will be rewarded with a decent score!

'Tis a very good seascape - the clouds in motion really give it life. Works for me in B&W, too.
