Hares boxing on a hoar frost covered meadow. I spent quite a few hours over several weekends watching these hares. This shot followed nearly 2 hours laid, balaclavad and gloved in the frost covered field - it was bloody cold, but worth it!

For those that thought these were rabbits, they are actually hares, quite different. Hares do not live in burrows, but out in the open. In Spring, as the female approaches fertility, they gather together. The males chance their arm, so to speak, but unless she is at peak fertility the female will resist their advances quite aggressively, and these wonderful boxing matches ensue.

This is one of my favorites! The position of the warriors against the wide tree in the background just balances the shot perfectly.

What a fun catch, Sara. Great timing. The lighting on them is wonderful too.

I love the sharp brown clarity of the hares in the pale blue surrounding of the frosty day. The DOF and focus seem to be perfect, and the action is fascinating. Congratulations on the very high placement in this crowded challenge.

BTW, Deb said it was one of her top ten for the challenge. I have a special "Deb's Top Ten" sucker on my profile page. Grab it if you'd like.

Sara, this is an amazing shot! First off I love the frost, gives a nice sense of morning to add a timeline to the production. I love the way you positioned them in the frame, it balances out the big tree in the background. I salute you for spending the time it took to capture this wonderful ritual of nature. This one is a fav. :)

OMG! That's an amazing thing to capture. I can't imagine too many people have seen bunnies boxing each other. Bet they weren't playing, either.

I like how the tree behind initially looks like an explosion, offseting the boxing match in the foreground. Lovely light, great action shot. Back to bump. Somehow it's almost surrealistic and I like it better each time I visit it.

Wow! That's an amazing capture, were you waiting for hours? That takes dedication! I particularly love the lighting and the way that the frost mutes the backdrop to really focus all attention on the animals. Wonderful.

I would not have thought that two psycho rabbits going at each other in a field could make for a good photo, well done, you proved me wrong.
