Had a pretty flat b&w image of a piling that I took as a possible perspective entry.

To increase the contrast I worked in RAW and sharpened it to 7.

I then moved the slider for the shadow/highlight curve all the way to the right.

Then I moved the shadow line to the tallest peak in the histogram and moved the highlight line to the first peak on the right in the histogram. This gave me something a bit darker than the look we see here. I lightened it up to get a smidge more detail by boosting the brightness to +.33 and converted it to tiff.

In Gimp I rotated it slightly trying to get the horizon straight. Cropped it. Resized and then used Sharpen at 20 twice. Slapped on a border and saved.

this is great, Sia! I really like what you did here. Just a thought, but maybe try using some light burning at about 3-5% set to "Shadows" and pull out some more of the detail in the darker grain from the foreground towards the middle of the beam. Not sure if you can, just a thought.
