OK I had this discussion with Skip via PM during the challenge, he was voting and commenting on all of the images during the challenge, and I explained to him that it was too easy to ruffle feathers here and thought that it would be best if I kept my mouth/keyboard shut while the challenge was in voting. Now that it is over and several have asked what we the voters thought was wrong with their image/why it scored where it did in threads. Here is your chance to get an honest critique on your image. I'm not going to lie to you, or sugar coat it. But if you can really handle a critique like I would use as to whether I would send your image to my editor if it was one I took on assignment or not please post it here. I will tell you why it works or why it doesn't. And perhaps give you an idea of what I would change to help make it better.

PLEASE REMEMBER I'm not going to critique your image for DPC purposes as to be honest I can't say I totally understand the world of DPC. But after 4 years in the sports dept working with the paper I feel I have a grasp on why an image would work in the context of sports imagery for newsprint for feature or to go with a game/event wrap up.

Matt

I'm not going to be mean, but I'm going to be direct and honest with you just as my editor and layout person would be with me. My intent is to be helpful.

I wouldn't mind a critique on my swimming shot from you. Just to get your input. I was a big fan of your sports shooting thread.

I liked the critique you gave mine, and I was glad it was not based on a DPC perspective. Just wanted to say thanks :)

Yes, I'd like some feedback. If you want to take the time, you can see my entry and a few alternate versions here in the outtakes thread. Thanks (I think), Larry

I would love to hear your critique on my shot. I was actually going to PM you to see if you would be interested in looking over some of my sports photos. So please be brutally honest. If you need any more info on my shot besides what I have in the description let me know. And congrats again on your ribbon. Would have been nice to see both you and skip on the front but both top 10 isn't too bad.

Thanks, Matt. That was much less painful than expected. It was good to hear from Skip during the challenge, too. Much appreciated.

Yes please.

I believe I have everyone done that has posted so far. I've got a couple of hours of free time tonight after work to grab some more if anyone else wants to toss it in. As citymars has eluded too, it's not nearly as painful as it sounds.

Sure, I'll take one o' those critiques! Skip commented during the challenge, and I must say I agreed with him wholeheartedly. ;-)

Hey Matt, I would love hear what you thought of my sports shot.

Thanks

I always appreciate feedback -- here's another one for you!

I would have liked to have been more to the left for a head on shot, but that area was fenced off with the non-see through fencing, (had to be in the stands for that angle.)

I would love to take you up on your offer. Here is mine of my son's game. I was test driving my new Nikon D300s and loved what I was able to get sitting in my chair on the sidelines.
I know I have a lot to learn and would appreciate the honesty. Everytime I think I get I realize I don't.

Thank you!

I would very much value your opinion Matt. I'm going to be a bit cheeky and post my three options for the challenge as they are vastly different shots and i like all three for different reasons.

My entry...

I was never terribly happy with the processing on this but i do like the composition and shallow DOF although i would have liked the centre player to be more sharp.

This perhaps might have scored better.

This isn't really action enough for the challenge but i do like it a lot and it is 'sports'

Hi Matt,

If possible, I would very much like your opinion on this picture as I am considering writing to my local paper who report our league results and have in the past published (and paid for?) photos.

As a caveat, it was a very gloomy and overcast day (hence high ISO) so if there are any tips you can give me for improving results/post-processing in similar conditions, I would be very grateful. (Unfortunately I have no budget for better equipment at this time!).

Many thanks,

Adam
