Would love the option to hide my average score on my profile page. The annoying little thing is reminding me that even with scores off I'm sucking badly. I'd rather just be totally oblivious and hold out hope until that final crushing blow at rollover, thankyouverymuch!

I understand, but I also wish I sucked as well as a 5.74.

I have a non-scientific theory that after a while, many of us start finding out what we like to shoot and how, and at that point, many of our entries start dropping in popular appeal. Except for those whose individual style and preferences resonates with the masses. Those folks join the ranks of the "ribbon hogs".

I agree with Yo.

...and a 5.74 average? I'm cryin for ya, Deb.

But you must understand that to get it to drop a full .01 in less than three weeks, with 300+ challenges, is a true feat of suckage! Try it, I dare ya! :-)

No, the average itself isn't the problem per se; it is the rate at which it is falling. Kinda like the gas gauge in those Ram trucks with the V8 engines...

avert your eyes - I have to do it all the time at WalMart.

There's always the option of turning on scores on the home page. . . if you force yourself to watch the actual scores of your current entries you won't feel the need to cheat by watching your average drop instead.

What you're doing is the equivalent of peeking through your fingers during the gory scenes of the horror movie! :)

First of all, allow me to give you a little encouragement and remind you how the DPC peeps think of you and your work around here...

And then let me remind you of the little reason why you dropped in your average:

A little stunt concerning the Abstracts Catalogue...

With a score of 4.241, it's not your photography that's sucking, it's the fact that you tried something different that didn't quite work out in your favor.

You are very talented. I have been encouraged by your remarks. I admire your lensbaby work and your blur stuff and all your other shots as well. So cheer up, it was just one little shot that brought your average down so much. Like it says in your member of the week thread... Deb Rocks!

Agreed, but perhaps it is the calm before the storm, and we will see another ribbon from you soon. I seem to get a string of low scores then a couple of high ones. Just enough to get me overconfident. Popular appeal is a strange an unpredictable thing.

Damn. That IS impressive! But with only half the challenges in total, it's almost the same degree of difficulty. Still, good job!

Exactly! And I hate the gory parts! No turning scores back on, though. That's just too harsh. And EL-ROI, thanks for the kind words. That one little score didn't help, nor did the couple of 5.0somethings I have showing and two more of those in the works... I'll learn eventually. :-)

Beat my score in that challenge!

Right now we're holding Deb back...we will unleash the passion of the pigeons during the DPL playoffs!

ETA: I happen to like the idea of hiding the site average when desired. Got my vote!

Well, hell, if I'm gonna sabotage my average, I might as well go all out. I'm about to go find the electrical tape as we speak. Though painters tape would leave less residue....

Oh, and yes, Ben, dear Captain, I am gonna enter the second one. :-) It's been awhile since I've gone sub-4....

I was going to make a comment about worrying about 1/100 of a point. But then I realized that is all that is keeping me above 5.00 ...sigh

The average is a very interesting statistic, in fact, the overall average doesn't really tell you much.

Once there are enough challenges entered, the ability for the overall mean to change is rather small. In fact, one can easily calculate an interval that the mean will be in.

Deb, since you started the thread, I used your scores and example....don't hate me :)

You entered 336 challenges with an average received vote of 5.7485.
For some reason, I was only able to pull 331 scores with an average of 5.7657, but that doesn't change this much.

Based on a confidence of 95 %, your average score will remain between:
5.7080 and 5.8234

What this means is that even a low score won't change things much. In fact, 99 % of all your future scores will be between 4.164 and 7.367.

Even if you received an average of 3 on the next 3 challenges, which isn't likely, your average score would still remain in the interval above.

So the moral for anyone entering challenges is to ignore the mean, just shoot, because that average won't change much.

(I love stats) :)

I think I can beat 4.164. :-) Maybe even this week!

Cool stats. Thanks!
