there were posts about a guy who did crazy 3D things with chalk (on the sidewalk no less) awhile ago, but I'll be darned if I can find the link...

Sure, but that is something quite different again. You might be referring to Julian Beaver or Kurt Wenner, they are brilliant, but there are others. Look at some of these in the link provided.

All ways liked the work of Chuck Close, Wiki. We have this one in our local museum Walker Art Center

A friend of mine bought a painting by Rino Gonzalez who does photo-realistic still life art.

I created a spoof and printed on canvas as a joke gift for him.

Probably Julian Beever? there was also a tv series on the process. Youtube should have some.
