Can personal bias be avoided while voting if you are aware what your current score is. I would be in favor of not revealing scores till after the voting has ended. It would probably help my sanity as well!! (not refreshing every five minutes.)
I have come to realize my own personal bias when i am voting. How much diffrent is a five than a six? It depends on what my score is...(only kidding). Is this a valid concern to true and accurate voting. I know we all strive to be above such pettiness but are we??

An honest posting. I never thought about it much and generally try to be as unbiased as possible. Lately, I've been voting and not submitting and my scores are probably the same. However, you may be right. There's no real advantage to seeing your score until it ends - however, I find it kind of fun to watch and wonder at the same time. Hmmm. I'd be 50/50 on this idea, but you may be absolutely right that this would make voting a bit less biased.

I think it's just a discipline issue. I can see my score, but I have a systematic way of voting and I vote accordinly. Mine may fall or rise, but it doesn't matter. I am one person and cannot change the votes of over 100 others. So, your single vote on every photo will not affect your score that much. Just vote honestly and if you want to create a system for yourself, it may help keep you from being biased. Vote as if yours was not even entered...

I think it is hard not to judge submissions based on what your own is getting. It works on either end of the spectrum--you might give photos you think are far better than your own a much higher score than you would have ordinarily. I try not to think of my own score when I vote. I try to stick with my system, which isn't very sophisticated but it works for me.

If you really feel strongly about this, you can go to your preferences and turn of the view of your challenge entries.

This is why I start voting at 12:00......i dont know my score until i have finished(or nearly finished) voting for all the entries. Try that out if u dont fall asleep..

As far as not looking at my own score goes, I don't think I would have enjoyed the shock of discovering I placed in the 4th % for my Unusual Viewpoint entry. As it was, even while being able to view my score, I had no idea it would do as badly as it did. I like to see how I'm doing, personally. I try not to be to obsessive about updating after the first few minutes of seeing my score.

I don't think I could have endured voting for the "Waiting" challenge late at night. That was a lot of entries and sorry to say, although there were some really good ones , there were also some pretty poor ones. I almost lost my resolve to vote on every entry. But I did it! Now I have to sort through, revise, and comment (that is part of my system).

Thanks Melissa, Turning off using prefrences might be a good idea. A point to mirdonamy... its just one out of 100...but if it affects 100 people then... it becomes 100 votes of maybe a five when it can be a six. Hmmmm it is going to be soooo hard to turn off my score...

I'm firmly of the opinion that we should NOT vote in challenges where we have submitted a photo. I've rarely voted in such challenges, and when I do so, I give everyone a '1' so that I'll finish relatively higher... ;-)

Seriously, human nature isn't so kind when noone's looking.

I try to enter as many challenges as possible, so it would be impossible not to vote, ever! I also like to help others by critiquing their work (if they asked for it) and I can't do that until the challenge is over unless I vote.

I know everyone is different and some people will vote everyone down, some will be honest, some will not vote and some will only vote on 20%. I know that 100+ votes will have a slight affect on my score if I vote on others, but it's too slight for me to worry about. I prefer to vote honestly and systematically. It's the only way we are going to help each other become better photographers... and to me, that's why I am here!

I agree with the "that's why I vote at 12:00" post- except I'm in PST so it's 9:00. I try to get through all of the photos before I check my score, though that doesn't always work for the basic challenges when there are over 300 entries since I try to give each photo enough time to accurately rate it, rather than just clicking through so I can see my score.

If you use the newly-improved forum search feature and search for self serving voting you'll find several threads about this issue. I've proposed an "I've finished voting" button several times in the past that would then un-hide your score to avoid this issue.

THis is an interesting point but I think if we really think about it we realise that our one vote against all the others is very small. Regarldess of how I vote on others, it will not bring my own shot up and will do extremely little to bring others' shots down.

Basically, folks to vote low if they would like but it aint gonna change a thing.

I agree with the IM finished voting feature! That's a great idea! I hope if they do that though, we can still go back and add comments (just not change our vote).

Yes, that was exactly my suggestion. Lock in your actual votes (so you can score them all in a resonable amount of time to see your own score) but still be able to go back and add comments.

Rooster: it isn't just "one vote". If there are 200 entries in a challenge and 150 of the voters also have challenge entries that either consciously or unconsciously let their current score affect their voting behavior ("My picture is only getting a 5.07 so I'm not going to vote anything higher than a 5 because my picture is better"), then that is 150 votes -- not just 1 -- that are affected by "self-serving voting".

In all the challenges I've entered I've only seen one instance of my own votes affecting my own finishing position. Why I ever gave a cat photo such a high score I'll never know! ; )

Seriously though, if anybody thinks that lowballing other shots is going to have a huge effect on their score then more fool them. And if they do happen to hit that 1 in a million chance where it does win them a ribbon then they will know that it wasn't a valid result. Woohoo, you get a virtual ribbon. The taste of victory would likely turn sour quite quickly.

Personally I think that if you stop people from seeing their score until they've finished voting then you'll just see all the votes coming in on day 1 and next to none for the rest of the week. Hell, you'd be punishing the people who take their time to consider their scoring, and those who like to lowball good shots would probably continue doing it anyway.

You're right, Gordon. So it's a choice we make. Pity, though, that we're all so human.

First of all, cats are GREAT subjects and can be worthy of 10s if they are clever, artistic and captivating!

Second, you make an excellent point about taking the time to consider the photos before voting and about people voting too fast. There could be voters remorse or regret by voting too fast.

Maybe DPC should just take out our ability to see our scores (for everyone) until the final results are in and the challenge is finished. I wouldn't mind at all really. It would give some of us more to talk about in the forums than how our photos are doing each day. :)

if you take away that little update button, what would be the point of visiting DPC? lol
06/10/2004 07:28:45 PM · #21
Haha, the main reason I visit DPC is to read forum posts, vote and critique. I like the update button, but can EASILY live without it. Heehee :)

I vote the same whether I'm in the challenge or not. I follow a certain criteria. Does it meet the challenge, is the composition good, colors, no colors, etc. Is it interesting, do I pause longer to look at it than others--does it move me. I forget about my photo entirely.
06/10/2004 07:46:48 PM · #23
I try not to vote in a challenge I entered, especially if I'm not doing well.
