surprisingly, nobody posted anything on this huge event. Half of Europe is being covered by ash, air traffic is at a standstill. I am worried about our Icelandic DPCers, how are you doing out there, guys? Stay safe!

This event also has some pretty serious implications for me and my family, since we are scheduled to fly to Turkey this coming Sunday via Heathrow... does not look too good now...

...and of course since this is a photographic site, cannot resist to put up a photo I just saw on Yahoo news site

isn't it AWESOME?

Nothing too much to worry about according to this link (Apart from all the UK airports being closed!) Volcanic Ash - Fallout
According to the weather man in the above link we will hardly notice anything - though he did say we may get some unusual sunrises/sunsets :-)

I'm scheduled to leave for vacation in Ireland on Monday and I fear this will impact my trip as airports are canceling flights.

Yep. I'm in Paris losing hope that my flight tomorrow will happen. Already showing 2.5 hours delayed. The originating flight from Newark may not even take off.

I have a friend who is flying to Europe tomorrow, hopefully -- just one of thousands who are no doubt worried about their flights, but she has been so looking forward to a vacation. Here's hoping everyone gets to their destinations safely.

Great photo, Lev -- I'll have to check out Brad's link, too!

Yep, I was supposed to be working in Belfast yesterday, and ended up wasting a morning with a nugatory early start and a long wait at the airport before the flight was finally cancelled and I could claim the refund! Better than a plane crash, though.

look this, there is the same photo before and after

Coast Guard personnel reached yesterday afternoon in radar images of the crater in Eyjafjallajökull. Three craters and each of 200-500 meters in diameter. Is this a sign ???
Kl. 17:11 This is a great picture taken in the devil himself. He was going to blow the Eyjafjallajökull, the message just not enough clear to him that we understood. He is perhaps something angry over Icesave and crash report ... "says the flight report TF-Sifjar, Coast Guard aircraft.

Haha, yeah, between erupting volcanoes and pink sunsets in Europe, we don't stand a chance!

I enjoyed those, a nice mix of volcano photos and the impact on travelers and others.
Some other good photos on that photoblog page, too, including a retrospective of a retiring news photographers work.

Now to check out The Big Picture. :-)

Well, we start to feel it here in Holland.

This morning all cars had a fine layer of dust on them, like you sometimes get in Italy if the Sahara blows over the Mediterrean sea.
I have been out to shoot two sunsets now, but they were not so spectacular. One time the sun dived behind the clouds just before in turned red. Yesterday it was nice but not wow.

The aeroport of Amsterdam will stay closed until at least sundaymorning. That is almost 60 hours no flights in and out. This causes problems:
- there are some bodies waiting to be flown back to their home country -> condition goes down, funerals postponed.
- we fly out a lot of flowers -> flowers go bad, and the supply pushes while we cannot get them out.
- Some fresh fruit cannot come in
- Postal services have delays (different routes)
- Sportsmen cannot fly to their games
- People are stuck in their faraway holiday or business locations, for example, Moscow-Amsterdam by train is at least 38 hours of train travel (faster if you train out of Russia and rent a car). You get the same problems if you route your Egypt flight to Switzerland and want to use the train from there. Especially since many fast trains are booked out now.

Now we wonder what will happen next. If the wind stays bad this can take a whole week and maybe more. There will soon likely be 24 hours that the wind will push the ash more south, but after that the wind is expected to head back to West Europe for a long time.

And I hear that NASA/ Icelandish organisations fear an eruption of an even bigger volcano next to this one, which could potentially dim the sun so much that we will have a very cold summer (not so nice for the agricultural sector and food supplies) and an ash cloud that makes it impossible to fly for months. If that one blows into the passat winds it will become a Northern global problem.

Good bussiness for the trains, ferries, taxis, busses and hotels tough. I heard John Cleese took a taxi from Oslo to London and paid 3500 euro for that. :)

You do know that the last time this thing erupted, it was years, not days...

If anyone's stuck in Lisbon with nowhere to sleep, let me know. Airports all around Europe are chaos right now, with no real chance of them opening any time soon.

Thx for the concern but really, Iceland is an volcanic island we get these all the time and this is a very very small one compared to some other volcanoes that could go off and frankly, living in Reykjavík, only about a 70-80 minutes drive away, you would never notice it if it wasn´t in the news.

If you stay with Insomniac, you'll be up all night anyway.
