I am seriously thinking about buying a Sony DCC-F707 and would like to know if it had macro on it. I did read the spec's on it and didn't find that in it. Feel free to speak if you have an opinion on the camera.
Thanks
Sonja

Oh and by the way jm, I love your outtake of transparency.
That would have been a ten in my opinion!

How large is the optical zoom on the Sony F707? Do you miss having a large optical zoom?

The optical zoom is 5x and the digital is 10x. I turned the digital off. I missed it initially cause my mavica FD-95 had 10x optical and 20x digital. The digital zoom degrades the image quality too much to suit me but the added resolution of the F707 makes up for the zoom. I can crop a great image out of whatever i take... :)

I'm a little late but I thought I would chime in. I think F707 has very good macro capabilities. I just purchased a 1.8x teleconverter for it so now it has a very good zoom range. The teleconverter is somewhat limited by having to use an f-stop between f5.6 and f8 but I can live with that. I am pretty happy with it so far and I will give more details including pictures later on.

My 30 year old son is looking for a starter camera. He will want to make some 8X10's. What do you recommend.
Thanks

Is price an option? The DSC-S85 went way down in price to 599.99 at the stores and even lower online. This is a 4.3 mp camera and has suited me well. I have seen its limitations but it’s an excellent beginner and intermediate camera. I would certainly recommend it for the price and the excellent quality of the lens

Just wanted to correct the model number on the subject line. :-) P.S. I love the camera as well.

Since the F707 has a nice little meter that shows you when you are in the digital zoom range, I leave it on. By leaving it on I can do the cropping first, in camera, before any jpeg compression is added. I try to be very careful with it and I only crop tightly, digitally, if I am certain I would, otherwise, do that in Photoshop later on. But I will usually take a wider, non digitally cropped image as well. It's not a big difference but when I am taking a ton of photos any time saver is welcomed.

After talking to John I bought the Sony F707 and I love mine ! The macro shots are very crisp and clean. I've never been let down yet:)
