I was surprised at how many people just went out and found red objects. I thought we were supposed to find a way to convey what we thought of the color red. I found very few photos that evoked any real feeling me other than "pretty" or "nice shot." Which was disappointing as I was looking for something else.

Oh well.

I agree. I think the meaning of the challenge was lost.

The title has a lot to do with these pictures, too. It leads us to the author's intention. I'm unable to give most of these good ratings because they're utterly superficial and lacking any depth.

(Wow, did that sound harsh?)

I wholeheartedly agree with the both of you. I spent almost the whole time period racking my brain for my interpretation of red. i.e., when do I see red? I see red when I'm very angry. And I see red when someone is embarrassed. (red cheeks) And I just thought of another one, when its cold, we get red cheeks. I didn't want to embarrass anyone and it's already 70 degrees here.

Then I thought to myself, these are lame, where am I going to snap a pic of someone very angry and expect everyone else to see red, without an explanation before they voted? Soooo, at the very last minute, I snapped something red.

But, even at that, I think there are some very nice photo's submitted. And as in the Macro challenge......just because it may not have been macro, we still liked the pics and voted just the same.

I don't think "anger" when i see or think of red, i think "warmth" and "energy" and shot my photo accordingly ...the photos submitted are based on the individual photographers interpretation of the challenge. I think there are some very nice photos submitted this time around, some thought provoking ones as well, and i base my voting on the individual's interpretation and quality of the photo, not necessarily in that order :o)

I voted on the challenge as I saw it. And then on the usual factors of composition and creativity, appeal etc...

And I think that most of the submissions missed the boat and just filled the shot with something red. I saw the challenge as to make the focal interest of the shot something red. Not the whole shot or just the background of another image. I didn't get in on this in time to submit a photo so I'm not sure what I'd of come up with but it would of had something red in a scene that is already red (not placed there) and perhaps the only red item in the scene to grab your attention.

I agree that some of us missed the boat. I know I did. What I thought emitted a kind of homey down to earth atmosphere came off looking stupid. It's kind of funny, I put very little thought into my submission and am getting some very kind critiques. I deserve much worse in this challenge. I guess it's so bad that most people don't have the heart to put it down too much.

There are however, many great entries this time.

I wanted to convey red as life and energy. Red as hot. But my shot turned out pretty bad too hehe. I'm not really happy with the comments I got though. Almost all of them were not critiques, instead they were just put downs. But oh well, next time I'll get a better lookin' picture and maybe I'll get less put downs : P.

My interpretation of the challenge was to make the picture "say RED" so that's what I did, I got as much red as I could and took the picture! Since that is the way that I interpreted the challenge, that is also the way that I voted, I looked for red pictures, then took into account the usual factors of creativity, focus, impact etc.

There seems to be many different ways to look at this, huh?

Same for me. Oh, I had some crazy "artsy" ideas but it wasn't until I went out of town one night, camera in hand, that I came across my shot. It looked much cooler originally than it turned out---but that's cool. It's still fun to attempt the challenges. Except for this new one. arggh. I hate pictures of myself!;) Is it possible to do a "self portrait" where you are not completely the focus of the picture?!!

Just like you can interperet the red challenge as the essence of red or as the color red itself, I'd imagine that a self portrait could be literal or metaphorical. What you look like isn't the entirety of who you are, after all! I've taken a few of each, and now I have no idea which one to submit! :)

yes of course it is. it is also possible for you to be the in focus center of attention and still quite nebulas-perhaps even mysterious.

(My 2 cents....a bit late, I know, but here they are anyway...)

If I remember correctly the first couple of days the challenge never stated anything about "interpretation", it only mentioned that it had to be "mainly in a red hue". Some people turned a photo in before the challenge was reworded.

I think the photos are fabulous on this challenge. People came up with really creative ideas...

'nuff said ;)
