This idea has been suggested before but I'd like to give a alternate solution...

Comments during voting have been lacking and several people have suggested the use of an additional "check" box to let people know whether or not they want comments. I think, as a temporary solution, there is an easy fix to this issue. We, everyone that submits to a challenge, add a identifier to our title so voters will know that we want comments.

Something like this;

AC - All comments are welcome. I will accept them, good or bad, with no repercussions to the commenter. I just want to know what you honestly think of my submission.

DC - Don't comment on my photo. If I want comments I will ask for them after the challenge is over in the forum.

POTB - Pats on the back. I'll take comments, as long as they are only positive in nature. Harsh critiques are not acceptable.

So a title might be, "Insert Title Here (AC)" or "Insert Title Here (DC)". I think this might help those who wish to comment but don't know how others will accept that comment.

Thoughts??(AC)

Easily 2/3 of the people who vote don't read the forums, is my estimate. And that entire group of people will be confused by this code, and may even lash out against it in the voting. I don't think it's a viable approach, sadly...

I was going to say that there's nothing preventing some of you from experimenting with something like that, but you'd have to be prepared to accept a negative as well as positive result. I agree that a lot of people won't know what those letters after the title mean, and -- unless there are a ton of them -- won't care enough to check and find out.

I tried it once, and got blasted for it. If enough people agreed to do it, I think it would work, however.

I just know from personal experience here that people complain about getting zero or low comments. Then when you do comment there are people who get wildly irate because you didn't love their shot enough... There needs to be a way to let people know.

I think it would be a great feature but it seems like it would have to be done internally. Sometimes I love a shot so much that I really don't want critique. Most times I really welcome them... in fact, I especially love the critiques that come with suggestions. For example, "Your shot seems a bit dark, try a selective level adjustment" as opposed to "too dark".

I think I would definitely be more willing to take the time to comment if I think that the person is looking for suggestions on making their shot better. The touchy feely comments are all good but I can get those on Flickr and Facebook. Here I'm looking for constructive feedback (with a little touchy feely thrown in).

Could we look at doing a trial run with one of the upcoming challenges to see if this is something that we may want to pursue? We could start a thread with those interested and have whatever letters we want to use in the title. If we can get 20-30 people interested in giving this a shot it may be more sucessful then if we do it on our own. I would be willing to participate. CW(Comments Welcome)

Don't you have a husband for that?

I'm all for it.

I'd add AC to mine, but I won't participate because I think it would devalue my title -- not to suggest that any of my titles are gold or inviolate or whatever, but cosmetically the idea doesn't appeal to me. I wouldn't ding anyone for doing it, but it would probably detract from the experience of voting for me.

I'm in as well of course...I would suggest doing this for "open" challenges first so it might have more movement. As for devaluing a title, I guess if no one understands what it is for it would be confusing and might cause problems. An alternative to using "AC" would be to leave it blank, thus showing that you will take any comments...

PROGRAMMERS!!! PEOPLE IN CHARGE! LISTEN....

This thread is one of the keys to easing a serious problem... I can write the code for this in 20-30 minutes, easy, and I'm not even a web-programmer, I just do it once in a while for my job...

20-30 minutes.. Fix a shit-ton of problems. Yeah, please listen.
