My membership is expiring soon. I feel like my life outside of the Dream Center will come to an end soon. Anyone want to help me out? im doing an internship for a place that does inner-city outreach and I am unable to get a job as this consumes all my time.

can anyone help a brother out? :)

you seem to come up with the money for smug mug's hosting fees ... I think it's pathetic that you would openly beg for someone to pay your way ... DPC has an option to pay month-to-month and it costs less than a fast food meal ... I'm sure you can come up with $5/month til you get a paying job ... or you could ask your family for a birthday membership ...

edit to add: I was unemployed for a while last year but I didn't beg for a membership ... I let mine lapse until I found a job and could afford to join again ...

I paid the $5 month membership fee because I wanted to do the Shoes challenge. I don't know that I'll be able to pay $25 when the month expires or even another $5 - I went YEARS without having a paid membership because the membership fee was an expense I couldn't justify.

I hear ya ragamuffin. I've been wanting a paid membership for sometime and even though it's only 25 bucks sometimes it's hard to justify spending that money. Heck, besides normal expenses, I've had car repair to deal with, both the oldest sons have moved back home, and I'm investing in my photo business. I keep thinking, ok, next month I'll come up with it....but next month there is always something else begging for my disposable income. Speaking of....I need new running shoes. ;-)

my point exactly, ladies! There are a LOT of people having financial difficulties right now ... but we don't see them all in the forums begging for hand-outs ...

Oh...it just gets better and better every single day. Why? some of us ask and then others ask Why not? And then the twists and turns appear in the road ahead and we all ask how did we get here? I didn't see that in my rear view mirror. Just remember, objects seen in the passenger side mirror are larger than they appear.

I figured I would make my case known instead of others who tell everyone goodbye and say they will miss everyone so that someone will volunteer to pay for their membership.

Thats not a cigarette, its a cigar from a box of cigars that someone gave me for serving our country and for shooting their daughters' wedding. Plus that was taken over 2 years ago when I was in the military and had a good paying job.

As far as the fast food thing is concerned, no I dont have the money for it, and no I dont smoke nor do I have money for it. (i quit several weeks ago)

i am doing an internship for the LA Dream Center which is a church that does outreach in the inner city. Pretty amazing site they have here. www.dreamcenter.org if you are interested...

I made the decision to sell everything I owned to come to LA and volunteer here and be a part of something much bigger than myself. However, that takes up all my time.
They give me a place to stay and food to eat so thats how I eat.

As far the smugmug thing is concerned, I paid for the whole year last year when I had my nice government paycheck coming in. It will be expiring soon, and I will be going somewhere else for my website, somewhere a bit cheaper. You can claim I spend my money on other things and Im sure you will so before you do it, Ill just fill in the gaps for you

It was just a question anyway.

Like coryboehne wrote, do a tutorial for DPC! Then you can put it towards the membership! I could never ask anyone for money! I don't like it when people beg for money!

Matthew, just because you can't pay your membership doesn't mean you have to go away. I don't have a paid memebership. Sure there are benefits to being a registered user (of which I hope to be soon) but you can still hang out, enter challenges and post in some of the forums just as a member. Life happens and you just gotta make your way as best you can. Plus, you don't have to explain to anyone, much less to a bunch of people that don't you, how you spend your money....unless maybe someone does offer to pay this for you.

So yeah, it was just a question, but seems some folks took it real serious and came down on ya pretty hard.

I dont beg either, and I never knew about the whole tutorial thing, I didnt see the post anyway. I like earning my way through life, thats just how things are. However, you learn to lose your pride when you hit rock bottom and ask for help. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

Ill see if I could contribute at all towards making a tutorial. That sounds like fun....

hitting rock bottom and asking for help is one thing if it's for things in life that are necessities ... food/shelter/medical etc ... a DPC membership is not a bare essential of life ...

Im not trying to be a smartass or anything, but if you dont have a camera or computer then shouldn't the free membership be adaquate?
03/03/2010 02:46:59 PM · #15
Sell your Casio Exilim EX-Z1000. It's unnecessary and it may give you 50$.
03/03/2010 02:50:49 PM · #16
well, I didnt sell everything. I sold everything besides a suitcase, my computer and camera, and my acoustic guitar. Basically everything I would need out here I took with me. I got rid of that camera a long time ago.

Its really not meant to be a big deal. I see people do it all the time and I figured I would let my intentions be known by flat out asking for help instead of hiding it in a bunch of other stuff. I just wanted to be honest.

And you were, and a darn site more so than plenty who have gone before you. Clearly the accepted norm is to come in with a mini tantrum, stamping and yelling, or sying a mock farewell to everyone, very publicly. You are not manipulating anyone. People can either make an offer of membership or ignore your request. I really can't see why people are so upset!

Well..i'm almost your age and i don't have a job too, i receive money from my work to pay for my bus, if i really needed a membership i would probably go walking or something. The point is..a guy gave me my one year membership as a gift. We don't ask for gifts to people we don't even know. It's unpolite and kind of pathetic. You live in US, i'm sure it's simple to work in a shop or a fast-food restaurant at least for a month. It's hot in LA? Make some cold lemon juice and go sell on the street if you are in such a need. It's cold? Make some coffee then. I'm sure you know how to make something. If you are working in the church i'm sure someone can find you a simple job, but please, you are a 25 year old guy, probably healthy, north american, beging for money in a website to buy a membership? Please...stop doing that. It even makes me feel a little offended.
PS: In my culture this is not "being honest", it's streetwise, lazy or things like that.

Begging? I wasnt begging at all, I know the difference between begging and just asking a simple question if someone would be willing to give me a membership for a year.
I know the difference because I see it on the streets in LA where I do work. Like my current entry from Skid Row.

However, this internship takes up all of my time. I do not have time for a second job, this literally does take up all of my time. I work 9-5 and I after work I continue to work (building websites, photoshoots for the church, doing outreach in various places.).

I am working other angles, marketing myself in the photography market here and I have made a lot of great contacts, but I just got here 3 weeks ago and things just dont move that fast yet.

I suggest you get off your high-horse and stop acting "holier than thou" in your speech about being offended. If you are offended then you dont have to reply, just find another thread to post in.
03/03/2010 03:23:09 PM · #20
I feel offended because i treat people who are not capable of working and can't stop to help a church or they will die without food. I have friends in other countries living with basic things because they are too doing internship and even those people don't BEG. Be mature and stop that speech.
I'll move to another thread like you asked so this don't become another closed one, but i really hope you stop this sad thing.
Good luck.

And during the times that I haven't been active it wasn't because I didn't have a paid membership - it was because I wasn't shooting very much. Now - THAT had to do with a combination of lack of funds to go anywhere, an idiot boyfriend who just didn't get "it" when it came to my photography, and lack of inspiration because the idiot boyfriend was killing my soul by degrees. I can't believe I put up with his stupid butt for two years....

Don't worry about this. I would seriously suggest just relaxing, you were (overly?) honest, an admirable trait (and certainly disproves the "streetwise" comment from earlier).

Go write a tutorial, hell write 12 of them, gosh knows there's plenty of room.. I might even suggest that if you don't have the knowledge to make that happen, try reading a few websites, trying a few techniques, then synthesizing a tutorial from what you've learned... You should have no problem with the HTML since you do websites already..

Cheers, and please let me know when you get your first tutorial done, I for one, would love to see it!

Again, theres a big difference in asking for help and begging. The bad connotation with begging or beggers is that its usually associated with people that arent willing to work for money. Thats not the case with me. I put in more than 12 hours per day towards my job and its often stressful. I do go beyond what is asked of me because thats the right thing to do, and I dont ask for anything in return.

again, all I was doing was asking a favor. Now that I know I can help pay for a membership by submitting tutorials I will do that. I have solved my initial problem and no longer need to ask for help.
03/03/2010 03:37:53 PM · #24
I hope you do make a tutorial because I need all the help I can get with my pictures!
Cheers!

Are you begging for a tutorial/help or are you asking for one? lol. I think i will do one on displacement mapping and few HDR tutorials.
