Hey guys I need your help. I finally decided to get a better lense for my camera but I dont want to spend more than $500-600. Here are the options I found, basically I will use it for portraits but since Im making an "upgrade" I would like a telephoto zoom lense as well.

Option A (both lenses around $400)
Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Autofocus Lens

Or

Option B (just this one $630)
Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens

Thanks!

Option A in my opinion largely based on the 50 mm f/1.8. A fast 50 is a must as far as I am concerned. IS on a telephoto is a nice to have but faster is always better. (You can stop the camera from shaking but what you are pointing the camera at is likely to move)

Option A for sure, I love my 50mm!

What lenses do you already have? I have a Canon 28-135mm lens, and it's my work horse lens that I keep on my camera 99% of the time. Granted, I only have three lenses, but still.... They have it used at bh.com for $299.

Definitely get the 50mm lens. Makes a nice little portrait lens.

You can get that Canon 100mm lens for $519 from bh.com.

I've got to say, what you should buy really depends on what glass you already own, I like ragamuffingirl use my 28-135 more than any other lens.. And here's the best bit-- You can own one for just over $350.. Pretty good glass overall, biggest problem I have is that it's a bit of a "loose" lens... Basically the telescope can/will move if you tilt the camera over about 40 degrees forward.. Although that is more than made up for by the reasonably good optical quality and the IS.

Still, for $350, I would say this and the classic 50 1.8 are excellent choices (and you could get both on your budget!)

Then again, if you want to punish yourself, go have a nice long look at the 85 1.2... Oh how I wish I had 1800 bux.

scrap both those plans and get the 50mm 1.4 It's worth the upgrade over the 1.8

Then again, I don't know what I'm talking about most the time, but I do like to talk!

I am looking at getting a telephoto and am torn between the two telephoto EF-S lenses available.

EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

In use with the XSI or the other consumer level DSLR's I am leaning toward the 18-200 at this point due to the results achieved by Tammster using it with the XSi and by KarenNfld with the 40d.

However I do admire the work of bnilesh using the 55-250 along with the XTi.

I also have the 50mm f1.8 II but I only paid $100.00. I find it to be slow in low light conditions and I get a lot of out of focus shots due to very shallow depth of field... though that may just be because my skills are low. Using ISO 1600 I get a lot of noise like in these examples where you can see both the noise and the issues I get with shallow depth of field. (The first one was photoshopped a little areound the eyes and face because I tried to salvage it.) I shot both on auto focus using the single center focus point and focusing on the eyes. Both were shot using f2.0 at ISO 1600.

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Is a great little zoom lens, brand new design with the new, 4-stop IS technology, at $340 or so list price. PennyClick loves it on her 7D.

I have both lenses and while I haven't had the opportunity to use the 50mm much since I got it... I really like it. I say buy these (at least my own non-professional opinion).

I have to say that I really do love the convenience of the 18-200. Although the quality isn't up there with the $1,500+ lenses (I'm assuming), it really is a good lens to keep on most of the time and the price is right. I do have 100mm lens that I use for macro or portrait shots (not as much as I should) and I'm 99% sure that I'm going to cave and buy the 10-22 in the next week or so (happy birthday to me!) for the higher quality wide angle shots that I love to take down in South Florida. I do tend to see distortion on the horizon shots when I go out to the 18mm.

(Thanks for the compliment by the way El Roi!)
