I hereby propose Sunday, July 11, 2010, as the Official 4th Annual Northeastern PA GTG at Rickett's Glen!

Many of us at this weekend's strobist GTG in the Poconos talked about how much we enjoy the Rickett's Glen gathering, so I thought I'd get the ball rolling so we could get a date nailed down on the calendar.

If you've joined us in the past, you know how much fun we have had at this park. If you haven't joined us... sign up! You'll have a blast! Rickett's Glen features more than 20 beautiful waterfalls, and we always enjoy a fun picnic lunch together.

Anyway... let's get the ball rolling -- who would like to join us?

Likely attendees:

Scalvert - donuts
alanfreed - Remarkable brownies
Stiger - Paper plates & cups
NikonJeb + Family - Grill, cooler, water
TonyT - Soda, juice and whatnot
Nikolai1024
sceneit + Tom & Lindsey
Cshell + Pete

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Here's some additional info for planning purposes (much of which I am admittedly copying/pasting from last year :)

We'll officially meet on Sunday, July 11, at 10:00 a.m. at the Visitor's Center at Rickett's Glen. I will be heading up there on Saturday, and would enjoy meeting any other folks who are planning to arrive in the area a day early. Send me a PM if you'd like to get together on Saturday! The Rickett's Glen Hotel is an economical and very convenient place to stay if you're interested in lodging the night before.

Here's a map of the Visitor Center location:

GPS COORDINATES for parking area at Visitor's Center: N41 20.106 W76 18.080

MISC DETAILS

Previously we have met at the Visitor's Center at 10:00 (which is what I'm proposing again for this year), and we moved a few cars down to the picnic area along Route 118. We started hiking the trail by 11:30, and made it to the picnic area by 3:00. It's pretty much impossible/unrealistic to attempt to keep everyone together for the hike, so I would suggest that we all simply try to meet at the end of the trail at 3:00 to begin the picnic. That has worked out well for in the past, giving us enough time to enjoy the hike and waterfalls along the way.

NOTE

There are a few references in the first posts about this being the same weekend as the NYC GTG... ignore those... July 11 is a good date, and I've updated this post to reflect this date instead of the one I had originally suggested.

That's the weekend of the NYC gtg. I think a lot of the PA/NJ people are going there.

Oh, well, pick another weekend, Alan. If people want to spend their time in boring little old NYC instead of grand, beautiful Rickett's Glen, well, we have to be accommodating. :)

Name the date, I'll be there.

Welllllllll, crapola... my only other options are to do it during Memorial Day weekend, and I strongly suspect that would throw a wrench into a lot of plans for people, or wait until July. Or someone else will need to take it over :(

I changed the proposed date to July 11, which is obviously later than usual... but we'll see if that'll work.

I'm not necessarily sure Memorial Day Weekend would be a bad thing. That or July 11 is open for me so far.....

I checked with Alan, and he agrees that it might be fun to add another aspect to the GTG this year. After the successful Strobist GTG this past weekend, I was thinking that perhaps we can incorporate some of that into Ricketts this year. I know that last year we had a couple of models with us on the hike, but it was very informal and kind of fell apart quickly.

What I propose is this: anyone interested in doing an outdoor Strobist-style model shoot arrive around 1230 pm, which gives us at least two full hours before the picnic lunch. We can stick close to the lower parking lot where the hike ends - there's plenty of good spots just up and down stream from there. We can get some models, get them in the creek, under the falls, etc, and then when the hikers arrive at 3, we can all have a big picnic together.

Afterwards, if folks wanted to stick around, we could do a second model shoot - that way anyone who had been hiking during the first shoot could partake in the second.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone interested in casting their lot with me on this?

(And I just want to say that I'm not trying to hijack the GTG or anything. I love coming to Ricketts each year, and always look forward to seeing everybody again! I'm just a bit burned out on waterfalls and thought this could be a fun way to mix it up a little.)

My only concerns about Brent's idea are:

1. If people decide to arrive solely to shoot models, there will need to be assurances that there will indeed be models :)

2. I would hope that any participating models will be very willing to stick around for those of us who are doing the hike... I'm sure many of us would want to have the opportunity to shoot them after the hike, as suggested.

3. It would be great if we had a model or two who was willing to make the hike, if that's not asking too much. We could attempt to organize a hiking model expedition a little more smoothly.

4. There is no #4, at least not that I recall :)

Personally, I definitely want to hike the falls again this year -- perhaps starting down the other side of the trail. I like the idea of alternating the route from year to year so we're seeing different falls each time. Hopefully the upper lot area will be open this year so we can start at Ganoga (the 90' tall one) and see those again.

If there's enough support to go with this idea, #1 & #2 will be a sure thing. We'll do it the same way we did the last one; engage the models for two separate time slots and go with dependable people.

As for #3, I guess that would be up to the model :-) But if one was willing, and it could be organized better than the last try, then it should work well.

Other ideas are cool as long as the hike, the shooting of the falls, and the picnic remain as the central theme. I can't imagine that the family aspect will be enhanced in any way by the model shoot addition, and I'm always on the lookout for some family aspect of a GTG to thinly disguise my obsession into something acceptable. Throw in a model shoot as well, and the connection becomes tenuous.

So we must at all times hang onto that shred of "Family Outing" identity at ALL costs! LOL!!!

That said, my daughter has expressed interest in perhaps becoming more amenable to being a victim subject for Daddy's camera as her boyfriend actually likes having his picture taken. So.....as I have gotten a commitment from her for a shoot late spring, who knows, maybe I'll be bringing two models!

And maybe we can impose on Geri sceneit to cough up a daughter or two as well.

If memory serves, she has THREE lovely daughters, though I can't for the life of me remember their names. I'm *such* an old fart!

The fine looking young man I believe belonged to the "Mysterious" young lady.....

My summer vacation plans were confirmed today, and this Ricketts weekend can be written in in ink on my calendar!

Woohoo! New blood to the Rickett's Glen GTG.

I've already secured that day off of work, so Lord willin and the creek don't rise, I'll be there.

Super! Don't forget your smile! ;)

And Jeb... her name is Jaimie, aka Cshell. Now if we could convince them to bring along her twin sister, too, we'd be in excellent shape!

Good grief, neither am I! Not after the first time we did that...
