In my searches I noticed there use to be several people in the Central VA area so I thought I would see if any (or new ones) are around. I am near Lynchburg, VA and thought maybe we could try for a gtg in the spring either around here or possibly DC. I was wanting to make a day trip up to DC this spring anyway.

So there it is let me know if anyone is in the area that may be interested in a gtg.

I'm in the Northern Valley. I could travel perhaps as far as Staunton or Fredricksburg.

I could be interested. Usually an event of some sort is fun to get together at. I'm running low on vacation days so I'd have to plan for a weekend (Sat or Sun) event.

Charles ( RebelBlue) I love your neck of the woods. Usually make a few trips up your way every year for the various seasons. Are we past the new skyline drive restricted hours period yet that they just started this year?

I'm in the Spotsy/F'brg area. I'll check the local calendar as there's usually something going on in downtown F'brg of a historic nature.

A Saturday Event would work best for me as my ex will have the kids on that day. I can travel 2-2.5 hours so wherever that will put me is fine. I know Charlottesville is just over an hour. Just seeing if there is an interest. Plus I love road trips. I make one to Williamsburg several times a year.

Think it would be fun to do something like this. I live in Richmoond and don't have a problem driving 2 hours in any direction. I usually head West to the Mountains but have made many trips to DC. Saturdays are also best for me. I also know K9Logic lives pretty close to me. She's a dear friend and also might be interested in coming along. Keep me informed via email if you guys figure out a date and time. =)

I'm in Williamsburg--sounds like fun, but depends on the weekend (two kids--lots of activities.)

Skyline drive has restricted hours? What's the deal with that--I couldn't really find anything on the website...

What about a reenactment? One with cavalry or something (Just a thought, since I haven't ever been to one)

I like Williamsburg. :-) If I went there I'd most certainly have family along for the ride.

Regarding Skyline drive...they started restricting a certain area in late Nov or early Dec I think it was. Basically they were closing it in the evening, but the hours impacted me personally because when I go I like to go early for the pre-dawn hours and they had the restrictions in place past primetime morning shooting hours. It was all related to problems they'd been having with poachers and deer hunting. I'll have to look again too and see what I can find out.

They have a cavalry event near Brandy Station (Culpeper area), but I can't remember the date without looking it up. Some civil war reenactments around Fredericksburg at various times of the year also.

Maybe there are not that many of us in VA. If we can get enough of an interest a Spring gtg would be fun.

I dunno why that'd be. Maybe expand/change the thread and call it a DC GTG if that's where you want to go. There have been quite a few of them, and many Pa, Md, and other surrounding folks will come.

virginia's a pretty big state ;-)

so many different things to do, places to go, it's pretty hard to get anyone to settle on any one thing. it's easier to get it going if you have something specific in mind, like an event or a particular place. depending on any number of factors, you might get two people or you might get twenty.

i'm out pretty much all the time, covering central virginia (well, the central virginia within a 90-mile radius from richmond). if anyone wants to get together anywhere around here, just say so.

I think there's plenty of people in Central VA. We've had pretty good turnouts for Shenandoah trips in the past.

vawendy...I haven't forgotten about this thread. :-) I need to check some local event calendars and see what's going on in the very near future. I'll go just about anywhere BUT DC.

Organizing a GTG usually takes more than a couple of days. :-D

I'd rather not do DC... But I guess I'm more of a country gal than a city gal.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to try and meet? Then perhaps we can start a more specific thread as was suggested? I can do Charlotesville area, Roanoke and any area in between. I am also up for a Richmond trip and Williamsburg area is always a possibility as I make several trips out there, I guess I just miss living there.

So anyone who is interested just reply with a preferred locale and we can go from there.

Looked around for a couple of ideas this morning...

145th Anniversary Encampment <-- I like this one the best.
Main page for above link.

19th Annual Revolutionary War Reenactment of the 1781 Battle of Petersburg

Just an idea (we could overbearing if we have a large group).

:-) Nice series!

Yep, encampments, plus horses, artillery firing, plus people and rustic (I'm assuming...never been there) buildings = candids, action, scenic, etc...

Had to toss an encampment shot in here too. :-)

I'm in Harrisonburg. I'd be willing to go as far as Richmond or DC. Staunton is a cool place.

I'm heading out on a picture taking stomp on Saturday. I can't go too far as I have to actually be back in Harrisonburg at 5:00 pm. So, anyone have any places I should see?

I'm in Reston and organize monthly photowalks in DC. While we haven't had a DPC GTG in quite awhile I've posted on the forum a couple of other activities in DC over the past year with no interest. Our next event is an early morning walk (5:30am) scheduled on April 10th for the Cherry Blossom festival. Let me know if you want more info on it.

I'm up for something outside of DC too. My wife and I attended a reenactment last year and want to do more.

I've never actually made it to Appomattox, though I've been to a lot of other Civil War sites. That sounds really interesting!

Marc - 5:30 AM?! Guess that's the only way to find a parking space ;-) Have they made any predictions about peak bloom yet? I haven't been paying attention.

I was really hoping to make it to the Cherry Blossom Festival this year but alas I will be in Williamsburg with my kids on Spring Break during that time.
