I wonder if anyone can solve a problem our camera club has stumbled across?
We use a software programme to project our digital images for competitions.
The programme requires that we put some information in the Image Properties (Author and Title info). This is not amending the EXIF info, it's usually done by (in Windows XP) right-clicking on the image, selecting properties going to the Summary Tab and putting in the Title and Author info. In Windows Vista it is slightly different in that we right click on the image go to Properties, and then the Details Tab and put information in the Title and Authors fields.

Our club laptop runs on XP, and when the images that have been labelled in Vista and put onto the laptop, the Author and Title information does not populate across. So when you look at an image labelled in Vista but viewed in XP, the Author and Title information are lost.

Does anyone know of a workaround for getting the info to carry across from Vista (and possibly Windows 7) to XP?

I don't think it's anything to do with the projection programme, it's to do with Vista>XP

Have you tried using an image processing application to populate the fields? For example ACDCPro or even Photoshop?

What's probably happening is that Vista is using another area of the metadata. Take an image without labeling and label it with both XP and vista. Open both copies with Photoshop and look at the metadata. You will probably find that the Vista and XP information appear in different places, for instance one may appear in the IPTC data, the other in EXIF.
As Barry stated, you may be better off using an image editor to populate the data. that way, you control hwere it goes.

I just tried it and you are correct. I added some info under Win7 and then pulled up the properties under XP. I did find that the subject field carried over, so if your workflow for these presentations just won't work any other way, you could use that field for the info you need to enter.

And herein lies the rub.
As I said this is a camera club laptop using software for competitions.
Lots of people send one or two of their images to the competition secretary, and he loads them onto the camera club laptop.
They have all been prepared in different image editing programmes.
I think it is unfair to expect the competition secretary to go through the images again to repopulate the missing data.
I am trying to find a solution that makes less work, not more.

Figure out where the information needs to be populated, and tell those submitting that they need to populate this information.

This is what I'm asking, in a way. What details/fields in image properties in a Vista image do we have to populate to make it show up as Author and Title info in an XP image?

Looks like Steve has the solution. Bold below added for emphasis.

That appears to be one quarter of the solution. I don't have Windows 7 so I hope that the subject field = Title field. I will pass this on to the competition secretary.
I still want to find out for both fields for Vista to XP and the Author field for Win7.
Thanks for your help so far.

The subject field exists under both platforms, but it is not the same field as the title.

It doesn't look like it is possible without an 'add on' (codec for XP) or perhaps an update (if available) to your slideshow app (whatever it is).

Possibly related to the Windows Imaging Component 'enhancement' in XP+ versions, but I am not an expert in this field.

If you want, e-mail me images with the information correctly populated (XP) and if you have one, one from Win 7. I'll do my best to figure out where the differences are. You can send to the address in my profile.

Thanks for your help.
I work on Vista at the moment, and I'll see if I can get an XP image.

Right, first of all, an apology.
Although the problem still remains in that Vista/7 image properties are not visible in XP, it doesn't affect the running of the competition software we use, as it picks up the correct info from any type of image (XP/Vista/7).
I misunderstood our competition secretary.
The competition secretary uses the club laptop to check if everyone has put all the relevant details on the image, and to do this, he uses Windows Explorer in XP, and so some of the details aren't visible. So he was having a rant at members for not putting the details in when they we just "hidden".
So we are sorted in terms of our club competition software.
Sorry to muck you all around.
