Not on the coast but near Orlando....about 1/2 drive.

Bok Tower and Gardens

A 205 foot neo-Gothic and art deco Singing Tower carillon located in the beautiful garden grounds.

Chalet Suzanne Restaurant and Inn
It is a quaint little place with a sparkling pool, lake and small airstrip are only a few steps from the courtyard or patio. There are whimsical spots at this location the Swiss Room, Wine Dungeon, Gift Boutique, Autograph Garden, Ceramic Studio (was there almost 3 years ago and that burned down but they may have rebuilt it), and the Airstrip and last but not least, the Soup Cannery. Just a little more history: Chalet Suzanne Soups were selected by NASA and the crew of Apollo 15 to be aboard their trip to the moon in 1973. The soups also went into space on Apollo 16:-) They can those soups and you can get them in some stores as "Moon Soup"

One photo in my gallery of the interior of one of the rooms in the restuarant

I live here...and there's bunches of stuff to photograph (except Mountains...sigh and NO Mt. Dora does not count)...what kind of things do you like to photograph?

there is Leu Gardens in Winter Park area...Downtown Winter Park (really nice on the wkends with all the people around they do a Farmer's Market every Saturday).

There is DeLeon Springs State Park where you can have all you can eat pancakes and griddle them yourselves (kids love this) and there is a swimming hole that you can cool off in (you'll need that in July...you do know it's brutally hot here then...)

There is a Pioneer Village South of Orlando (about an hour)...not sure if your traveling with kids or not...

The Columbia at Ybor (Tampa area) City!!!! Some of the best food there is!!! And they have flamago dancers, kind of different.

The Florida Aquarium in Tampa.

Mt. Dora is really quaint and has lots of boats, nice walking areas, old buildings...etc.

Anything sound interesting? I will look up the sites for you if you like and link them here...

If you like antiquing...let me know...there are some wonderful areas to hit here...

I like "old Florida" better than "tourist/paved Florida" so we do alot of State Parks, gardens and lots of old towns all over the place.

And Bok Towers was mentioned earlier...that would be very high on my list it is a beautiful botanical garden and historic home...just recently went there and was very, very surprised at what I found ...

It is 70% Colleges, Golf Courses and Retirement Homes, The other 30% is Amusement Parks. Alot of interesting Historic Buildings to shoot in the College Towns.

The garden type places may not be looking so good after the recent freezing weather. It may be best to call and check about that before you plan to go to them.
I second the Space Center and parks along the coast idea. It's only an hour by car from Orlando to the east coast. If you want to go to the Space Center, check on line as soon as you can to see what's available, and maybe get some reservations if needed.
ETA, I see that you are coming in July, so the places with flowers will be doing just fine.

Ryan - I will share the NYers view of Orlando and environs

Outside of the amusement parks, not much of interest there as a "city". No real terrain there its just all flat. If you can drive a bit, NASA isn't that far - worth seeing if you havent been, Daytona also - you can actually drive your car on the beach. The shore birds make cool shooting too. I always find the "southern living" shots to be interesting - the older small towns in central Florida - the old south caught in a time warp.

Lake Lousia St Park is nice, and near Orlando. They have a few cabins there that can be rented, and the woods there are pretty typical unspoiled Florida terrain. It would probably make a better day trip than overnighter, as it will be mid summer, hot, muggy, and mosquito season.
During the summer, the wading birds will be out near the coast, so there will not be much wildlife to shoot near Orlando.

If you are driving down from the north, a swing out to the White Springs area would be good for some old Florida architecture. St Augustine is pretty cool too if you like history.
idnic knows the Daytona area well, from a photographer's point of view.

Orlando resident for 9 years before moving to Austin. If you want birds, gators, turtles, and other Florida wildlife you absolutely can not beat Wekiva Springs State Park. Grab a canoe and head out for a couple of hours! (Just north of Orlando) For general strolling and people watching check out Lake Eola in Downtown. Great skyline shots to be had here as well. If you want to try out some action shots there are several good skate parks in town, the best surfing in Florida is 30 minutes away in cocoa beach, and one of the best Skydiving centers in America is in Deland. They even having a viewing deck on the roof. I'll think of some more later. Brain dead from taxes...
